Is Oklahoma an NLC compact state?

Yes. Oklahoma is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state. Oklahoma-licensed RNs whose primary residence is Oklahoma hold a multi-state compact license valid in all 41+ NLC member states. Nurses residing in other compact states may work in Oklahoma on their home-state compact privilege without a separate Oklahoma license.

Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Oklahoma

Step 1 — Verify eligibility and gather documents

You need a nursing degree from an OBN-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your transcript, government-issued photo ID, and criminal history documentation if applicable.

Step 2 — Create your OBN online account

Go to ok.gov/nursing and register for an online account. Oklahoma processes all RN license applications electronically.

Step 3 — Submit the application and pay the fee

Select "Registered Nurse — Initial License by Examination," complete all sections, and pay the application fee. Confirm current fee amounts on the OBN website before applying.

Step 4 — Complete the OSBI/FBI background check

Oklahoma requires both an OSBI (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) and FBI criminal background check, processed through IdentoGO. After submitting your application, OBN provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO location in Oklahoma with your service code and photo ID. Both the OSBI and FBI checks are submitted simultaneously through the IdentoGO fingerprint process. Results go directly to OBN.

Step 5 — Official transcripts to OBN

Your nursing school must send sealed official transcripts directly to OBN. Electronic transcripts from Parchment or equivalent services are accepted. International graduates must provide a CGFNS or NACES-member credential evaluation.

Step 6 — Authorization to Test and NCLEX-RN

After OBN approves your application, Pearson VUE issues your ATT. Schedule your NCLEX-RN at any Pearson VUE test center. OBN receives results from Pearson VUE directly — do not treat Quick Results as authorization to practice in Oklahoma. Wait for OBN to confirm licensure in the portal.

Step 7 — Receive your compact license

Oklahoma processes complete applications in 3–5 weeks. Your Oklahoma RN license is a multi-state compact license valid in all NLC member states.

Endorsement into Oklahoma from another state

  1. Submit the "Registered Nurse — License by Endorsement" application and pay the applicable fee.
  2. OBN uses Nursys for license verification from most states. For non-Nursys states (California), request a paper verification letter from your current Board addressed to OBN.
  3. Complete the OSBI/FBI background check through IdentoGO (same process as new graduates).
  4. Endorsement processing: 3–5 weeks from complete application.

CE requirements for Oklahoma RN renewal

Oklahoma RNs must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education per 2-year renewal cycle. Requirements:

  • CE providers must be accredited by a recognized organization (ANCC, ACPE, ANA, or other OBN-approved providers).
  • No specific topic mandate for the base 24 hours beyond general nursing practice.
  • CE records must be retained and may be subject to OBN audit during renewal.

Travel nurse tips for Oklahoma

Oklahoma's nursing market centers on Oklahoma City and Tulsa, with rural markets across the state generating periodic premium-pay demand. Major systems include OU Health (Oklahoma's academic medical center and Level I trauma center), Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, INTEGRIS Health (the largest Oklahoma-based health system), Saint Francis Health System (Tulsa), and Hillcrest HealthCare System (Tulsa).

  • Compact advantage: Nurses in any NLC compact state can work in Oklahoma on their compact license without a separate Oklahoma endorsement — making Oklahoma straightforward for travel placements.
  • OU Health: Oklahoma City's premier academic medical center runs consistent travel contracts in ICU, OR, and transplant nursing. OU Health credentialing is efficient — most travel contracts credential within 7–10 business days.
  • Rural Oklahoma: Oklahoma has a large number of critical access and rural community hospitals across its eastern, western, and southwestern regions. Rural Oklahoma travel packages carry meaningful geographic premiums for nurses willing to work in communities outside OKC and Tulsa.
  • Dual background check note: Oklahoma's OSBI + FBI dual check is slightly different from states using only one federal database. The IdentoGO process submits both simultaneously — do not request separate OSBI and FBI checks independently, as this creates duplication and can delay processing.

What we see at Ava Health

Oklahoma is a steady placement market. Oklahoma City generates reliable hospital-employed permanent placement demand across OU Health and INTEGRIS for specialty RNs, and Tulsa's growing healthcare sector runs active travel programs. Oklahoma's compact membership and relatively fast Board processing (3–5 weeks) make it one of the lower-friction South-Central markets for travel nurse placement via our compact network.
