Missouri RN License Guide 2026 — MSBN Requirements, Compact Status & Fees
Is Missouri an NLC compact state?
Yes. Missouri is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which means Missouri RNs receive a multi-state license that allows practice in all 41+ compact states without obtaining additional state licenses. Your primary state of residence must be Missouri to hold Missouri as your compact home state.

Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Missouri
Step 1 — Verify eligibility and gather documents
You need a nursing degree from an MSBN-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your nursing school transcript, a government-issued photo ID, and any documentation for past criminal matters if applicable.
Step 2 — Create your MSBN online account
Go to pr.mo.gov/nursing.asp and register for an online services account. Missouri no longer accepts paper applications — all submissions are electronic through the state licensing portal.
Step 3 — Submit the application and pay $75
Select "RN Licensure by Examination," complete all sections, and pay the $75 fee by credit or debit card. MSBN confirms receipt by email.
Step 4 — Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting (~$43.25)
Missouri requires a fingerprint-based FBI background check processed through IdentoGO. After submitting your application, MSBN provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO enrollment center — many are located inside Walgreens pharmacies statewide — bring your service code and a photo ID. Results go directly to MSBN.
Step 5 — Official transcripts to MSBN
Your nursing program must send sealed official transcripts directly to MSBN. Electronic transcripts from Parchment or similar services are accepted. International graduates must have credentials evaluated by a NACES-member agency such as CGFNS.
Step 6 — Authorization to Test and NCLEX-RN
After MSBN approves your application, Pearson VUE sends your Authorization to Test (ATT) — typically within 1–2 business days of MSBN approval. Schedule your NCLEX-RN at a Pearson VUE center. Results are reported to MSBN within 48 hours. Do not use the Quick Results service as your license authorization — wait for MSBN to update your portal status.
Step 7 — Receive your multi-state compact license
Missouri's typical processing is 4–6 weeks from a complete application to license. Your Missouri RN license is a multi-state compact license, authorizing practice in all NLC member states with your Missouri license number as the primary identifier.
Endorsement into Missouri from another state
- Submit the "Licensure by Endorsement" application and pay $75.
- MSBN verifies your current license through Nursys. Most states participate in Nursys, which MSBN queries electronically. If your state is not on Nursys (California requires a paper verification letter), request the verification directly from that Board.
- Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting as described above.
- Endorsement processing typically runs 2–4 weeks.
Endorsing from another compact state: Under NLC rules, you can work in Missouri on your existing compact license while your Missouri endorsement is processing — as long as you declare Missouri as your primary state of residence once you establish residency here.
CE requirements for Missouri RN renewal
Missouri RNs must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education per 2-year renewal cycle.
- At least 2 of the 30 hours must cover pain management, palliative care, or end-of-life care (Missouri statute requirement).
- CE providers must be accredited by a Board-recognized organization (ANCC, ACPE, ANA, and others).
- CE records must be kept for 4 years and are subject to random MSBN audit.
- Newly licensed RNs in their first renewal cycle: 15 contact hours (proportionally reduced).
Processing times
| Application type | Estimated timeline |
|---|---|
| New graduate (all items submitted) | 4–6 weeks |
| Endorsement (Nursys state) | 2–4 weeks |
| Endorsement (non-Nursys state) | 4–8 weeks |
| Renewal | 1–3 business days |
Travel nurse tips for Missouri
Missouri hosts major health systems across St. Louis (BJC HealthCare, Mercy Health, SSM Health) and Kansas City (Saint Luke's Health System, University Health, Research Medical Center). Travel nurse demand is highest in St. Louis metro and rural Southwest Missouri, where nurse-to-patient ratios are consistently strained.
- Compact advantage: If you are already licensed in any NLC compact state and Missouri is not your primary state of residence, you can work in Missouri on your existing compact multi-state license — no Missouri endorsement needed unless you establish permanent residency here.
- Nursys e-Notify: Enroll so Missouri hospital credentialing offices receive automatic license verification — most BJC and Mercy facilities require this for travel credentialing packets.
- Pain management CE: Document your 2-hour pain management CE separately — auditors check for this specific requirement during renewal spot-checks.
