Kansas RN License Guide 2026 — KSBN Requirements, NLC Compact & Fees
Is Kansas an NLC compact state?
Yes. Kansas was one of the original states to join the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Kansas-licensed RNs whose primary residence is Kansas hold a multi-state compact license valid in all 41+ NLC member states. Nurses residing in other compact states may work in Kansas under their home-state compact privilege without a separate Kansas license, as long as Kansas is not their primary residence.

Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Kansas
Step 1 — Verify eligibility and gather documents
You need a nursing degree from a KSBN-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your nursing school transcript, a government-issued photo ID, and documentation for any past criminal matters if applicable.
Step 2 — Create your KSBN online account
Go to ksbn.net and register for an online account. Kansas does not accept paper applications — all submissions are electronic.
Step 3 — Submit the application and pay $75
Select "Application for RN Licensure by Examination," complete all required sections, and pay the $75 fee by credit card. KSBN confirms receipt by email.
Step 4 — Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting (~$41.25)
KSBN requires a fingerprint-based background check through IdentoGO. After your application is submitted, KSBN provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO location in Kansas with your service code and government-issued photo ID. Fingerprint results are sent directly to KSBN.
Step 5 — Official transcripts to KSBN
Your nursing school must send sealed official transcripts directly to KSBN. Electronic transcripts from Parchment or equivalent services are accepted. International graduates must provide a CGFNS or NACES-member credential evaluation.
Step 6 — Authorization to Test and NCLEX-RN
After KSBN approves your application, Pearson VUE sends your Authorization to Test (ATT) — typically within 1–2 business days. Schedule your NCLEX-RN at any Pearson VUE center. Results are reported to KSBN within 48 hours. Do not treat Quick Results as license authorization — wait for KSBN to update your status in the portal.
Step 7 — Receive your multi-state compact license
Kansas processes complete applications in 4–6 weeks for new graduates and 2–4 weeks for endorsements. Your Kansas RN license is a multi-state compact license valid across all NLC member states using your Kansas license number as the primary identifier.
Endorsement into Kansas from another state
- Submit the "Application for Endorsement" and pay $75.
- KSBN verifies your license through Nursys. Most states participate in Nursys for electronic verification. Non-Nursys states (e.g., California) require a paper verification letter from your current Board addressed to KSBN.
- Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting as described above.
- Endorsement processing: 2–4 weeks from complete application.
Compact-to-compact: If you live in another NLC state and are relocating to Kansas, you may practice on your compact privilege while your Kansas endorsement processes — once you establish Kansas as your primary state of residence.
CE requirements for Kansas RN renewal
Kansas RNs must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education per 2-year renewal cycle. Requirements:
- CE may be completed through any KSBN-recognized provider (ANCC, ACPE, ANA, or other accredited organizations).
- No specific topic mandate is required for the base 30 hours (unlike Missouri's pain management CE requirement).
- CE records must be retained for 2 years following the renewal period and are subject to KSBN audit.
- Kansas RN licenses renew on March 31 of even-numbered years (2026, 2028, 2030). Set renewal reminders for February to ensure CE is complete before the deadline.
Processing times
| Application type | Estimated timeline |
|---|---|
| New graduate (all items received) | 4–6 weeks |
| Endorsement (Nursys state) | 2–4 weeks |
| Endorsement (non-Nursys state) | 4–6 weeks |
| Renewal (online) | 1–3 business days |
Travel nurse tips for Kansas
Kansas travel nurse demand concentrates in Wichita (Wesley Medical Center, Via Christi Health, Ascension Via Christi) and Kansas City (The University of Kansas Health System across the state line, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, Olathe Health). Rural Kansas generates periodic premium-pay travel contracts, particularly in the High Plains region where facility staffing is chronically thin.
- Compact advantage: Nurses living in any other NLC compact state can work in Kansas without a Kansas endorsement — their compact multi-state license covers them. This makes Kansas one of the easiest markets to staff quickly via travel contracts.
- March 31 renewal: Kansas RN licenses renew March 31 of even years. Travel nurses mid-contract in Kansas during March should complete renewal well in advance — a lapsed license triggers immediate work stoppage under most hospital credentialing policies.
- Rural premium: Hospitals in Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and Colby routinely offer housing + travel stipends 20–35% above metro-Kansas rates for travel RNs willing to work in High Plains communities.
What we see at Ava Health
Kansas's original NLC compact membership makes it one of our simpler markets to route candidates into — the majority of travelers we work with can cover Kansas assignments on their existing compact license without additional endorsement overhead. For permanent placements, Wichita is our strongest Kansas market, with KU Health System's new Wichita campus driving sustained RN demand in cardiology, oncology, and surgical specialties.
