Alabama RN License Guide 2026 — ASBN Requirements, Compact Status & Fees

Is Alabama an NLC compact state?

Yes. Alabama joined the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) in 2016. The Alabama State Board of Nursing (ASBN) issues multi-state RN licenses to nurses whose primary state of residence is Alabama. If you already hold a multi-state license issued by another compact state, you can practice in Alabama without a separate AL license — the compact grants immediate authorization to practice in any compact member state when your home state is also a compact member.

ASBN fees at a glance (2026)

  • Initial license by endorsement: $100
  • Initial license by examination (NCLEX): $100 (plus Pearson VUE fee of $200)
  • Biennial renewal: $90
  • Nursys verification: ~$30 per originating state
  • IdentoGO fingerprinting: ~$43–$50
  • Temporary practice permit: Included with endorsement application — no additional fee

Background check and fingerprinting

ASBN requires electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO using the ASBN-specific service code listed on abn.alabama.gov. Checks run through both the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center (ACJIC) and the FBI National Criminal Background Check System. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks after fingerprinting. Results are transmitted directly to ASBN. As with all state boards, proactively disclosing prior arrests or convictions — including expunged records in some jurisdictions — is safer than having them surface unexplained from the background check.

Endorsement timeline

Alabama endorsement typically processes in 4–6 weeks when all documents are submitted simultaneously. The most common delay is board-to-board paper verification for nurses coming from states not on Nursys. Submit your application, Nursys request, and IdentoGO appointment in the same week to minimize lag between pieces arriving at ASBN.

  • Application + fee submission: Day 1
  • Nursys verification request: Day 1
  • IdentoGO fingerprinting appointment: Within first week
  • Background check return: 2–3 weeks after fingerprinting
  • License issue: 4–6 weeks total

Continuing education requirements

Alabama requires 24 contact hours of CE per two-year renewal cycle. At least 1 of the 24 hours must be ASBN-approved content specifically addressing Alabama nursing rules and regulations — a distinctive requirement not universal to all compact states. The remaining 23 hours can be in any approved clinical, professional development, or management topic. CE must be completed before renewal submission and is subject to audit; retain certificates of completion for at least four years.

Travel nursing in Alabama: demand and market conditions

Alabama's major health systems — UAB Medicine (Birmingham, the state's academic medical center and largest hospital), Huntsville Hospital System (north Alabama's dominant network), Springhill Medical Center and Providence Health System (Mobile), and DCH Health System (Tuscaloosa) — are consistent users of travel nurses across ICU, ER, OR, and labor and delivery units. Alabama's compact membership creates a natural Southeast travel corridor: nurses with compact licenses from Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Mississippi can accept Alabama assignments with no additional state licensing.

Birmingham's medical district sees the highest travel nurse volume. UAB Hospital and Children's of Alabama are frequent destinations for specialty travelers — NICU, PICU, neuroscience ICU, and cardiovascular ICU in particular. Mobile is a growing secondary market, positioned at the intersection of the Gulf Coast corridor serving the Florida Panhandle and coastal Mississippi.

What we see at Ava Health

Alabama placements at Ava Health come primarily through Southeast compact network routing — nurses credentialed in Tennessee, Florida, or Georgia picking up Alabama assignments where their existing compact license already covers them. For nurses whose primary residence is Alabama and who want to expand their travel radius, the process is identical to other compact states: Nursys request and IdentoGO appointment on the same day as the application, temporary permit to bridge the first 4–6 weeks, and full multi-state license that then covers assignments across the entire compact network without per-state applications.
