Rhode Island RN License Guide 2026 — NLC Compact, Endorsement & RIBNE
Is Rhode Island an NLC compact state?
Yes. Rhode Island joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2020. Compact-licensed RNs from other NLC states can practice in Rhode Island under their multi-state license. This change has made Rhode Island a more accessible travel nursing market, particularly for nurses building a New England circuit (RI, MA, CT, NH, VT, ME are all compact states or have become compact in recent years).
RIBNE fees (2026)
- Endorsement application: $135
- Background check: ~$55–$65
- Biennial renewal: $110
Rhode Island as a Travel Nursing Market
Rhode Island's travel nursing market is anchored by Lifespan Health System (Rhode Island Hospital — Level I trauma, Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital) and Care New England (Women & Infants Hospital, Kent Hospital). Rhode Island Hospital is the only Level I trauma center in the state and generates consistent ICU, ER, trauma, and OR travel nursing demand. Women & Infants Hospital is a major destination for L&D and NICU travel nurses, known regionally as a high-volume OB center.
Rhode Island's compact status since 2020 makes it naturally paired with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire assignments for New England-based travel nurses.
CE Requirements
Rhode Island requires 10 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle — among the lowest CE burdens in the country for RN licensure. CE must be relevant to nursing practice.
