Understand that Massachusetts is a non-compact state
Massachusetts has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Every nurse wanting to practice in Massachusetts, including travel nurses, must hold a Massachusetts RN license. No compact privilege from other NLC states applies in Massachusetts. Plan for a 6-10 week lead time before any Massachusetts assignment.
Apply through the ePLACE portal
Massachusetts health profession licenses are managed through the ePLACE (ePlace Solutions) portal at elicensing.mass.gov. Create an account, select "Registered Nurse, Endorsement," and complete the online application. Pay the endorsement fee (~$158; verify the current amount at mass.gov/orgs/board-of-registration-in-nursing before applying).
Authorize Nursys electronic license verification
Massachusetts participates in Nursys. Authorize Nursys to release your current license record to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN) within your ePLACE application. If your home state is not on Nursys, request paper verification from your state board and mail it to the BORN office in Boston.
Complete the CORI background check
Massachusetts uses its own criminal records system, the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) system, for background checks. The CORI check is initiated automatically through the BORN as part of your application process. An FBI fingerprint check may also be required; follow the instructions in your ePLACE application confirmation.
Submit official nursing school transcripts if required
BORN may request official transcripts from your nursing school depending on your licensure history. Review the application checklist on mass.gov/orgs/board-of-registration-in-nursing. If transcripts are required, contact your school registrar immediately, transcript delays are a common source of processing hold-ups.
Monitor application status in ePLACE
Track your application at elicensing.mass.gov. Complete applications typically process in 4-8 weeks. Your Massachusetts license number appears in the public license verification tool at mass.gov when issued. Massachusetts does not issue a temporary permit, so plan your application timing accordingly.

No CE requirement for renewal: a notable benefit
Massachusetts is one of the few non-compact states that does not currently require continuing education hours for RN license renewal. Renewal every two years involves paying the renewal fee and completing required attestations. This makes Massachusetts an administratively simpler license to hold than most non-compact states with 20-30 CE hour mandates. Verify at mass.gov that this policy remains current before each renewal, as the BORN may update requirements.
Timeline expectations
Complete Massachusetts endorsement applications, Nursys verification received + CORI/FBI clearance + any required transcripts received, typically process in 4-8 weeks. Applications held for missing transcripts can stall indefinitely; initiate your transcript request the same day you submit your application. Massachusetts does not issue temporary permits for nurses pending endorsement.
