··5 min read

Massachusetts is one of the nation's premier academic medical markets, home to Boston's "Medical Mile" — Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess, Tufts Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center, all concentrated within a few miles. UMass Memorial and Baystate Health drive demand outside Boston. The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN) administers RN licensure through the ePLACE portal at elicensing.mass.gov.

Is Massachusetts an NLC compact state?

No. Massachusetts has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Travel nurses and nurses relocating to Massachusetts must obtain a Massachusetts RN license; no compact privilege from NLC member states applies. Massachusetts is a frequent target for travel nurses despite the non-compact status because of its high pay rates and concentration of top-tier academic facilities.

Endorsement fees (2026)

ItemFee
Endorsement application (ePLACE)~$158
CORI + FBI background checkIncluded or minimal additional fee
Nursys electronic verification (if applicable)$30
Estimated total~$188

No CE requirement for renewal — a notable benefit

Massachusetts is one of the few non-compact states that does not currently require continuing education hours for RN license renewal. Renewal every two years involves paying the renewal fee and completing required attestations. This makes Massachusetts an administratively simpler license to hold than most non-compact states with 20–30 CE hour mandates. Verify at mass.gov that this policy remains current before each renewal, as the BORN may update requirements.

Timeline expectations

Complete Massachusetts endorsement applications — Nursys verification received + CORI/FBI clearance + any required transcripts received — typically process in 4–8 weeks. Applications held for missing transcripts can stall indefinitely; initiate your transcript request the same day you submit your application. Massachusetts does not issue temporary permits for nurses pending endorsement.

What we see at Ava Health

Massachusetts generates the highest per-assignment pay rates of any state in our nurse pipeline for ICU, OR, and L&D nurses targeting major Boston academic systems. Mass General Brigham alone employs tens of thousands of nurses. The non-compact status is a consistent planning hurdle, but nurses who hold a Massachusetts license in addition to their NLC compact license have access to one of the most lucrative travel markets in the country. We advise nurses interested in Boston assignments to initiate the Massachusetts endorsement 60–90 days before their target start date.
