Is New Jersey an NLC compact state?

No. New Jersey has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Every nurse — including travel nurses on short-term contracts — must hold a New Jersey RN license to practice in the state. There is no compact privilege that permits nurses from NLC states to work in New Jersey without a separate license. New Jersey's non-compact status, combined with its 8–12 week processing timeline, means travel nurses must apply well in advance of any NJ assignment.

Continuing education for renewal

New Jersey RN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from approved providers. New Jersey designates specific mandatory topic hours within the 30-hour requirement each renewal cycle — verify the current required topics at njconsumeraffairs.gov before renewing, as mandatory categories are updated by board regulation. CE must come from providers approved by a recognized nursing CE accreditor.

Timeline expectations

New Jersey processes complete endorsement applications in approximately 8–12 weeks. Applications requiring paper license verification from non-Nursys states add another 2–4 weeks.
