New Jersey RN License 2026 — BON Endorsement, Fees & Timeline
New Jersey is a major Northeast healthcare market with some of the highest nursing pay rates in the country. Major systems including RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health, and multiple academic medical centers in Newark and New Brunswick operate across the state. The NJ State Board of Nursing, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs, administers RN licensure at njconsumeraffairs.gov.
Is New Jersey an NLC compact state?
No. New Jersey has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Every nurse — including travel nurses on short-term contracts — must hold a New Jersey RN license to practice in the state. There is no compact privilege that permits nurses from NLC states to work in New Jersey without a separate license. New Jersey's non-compact status, combined with its 8–12 week processing timeline, means travel nurses must apply well in advance of any NJ assignment.
Endorsement fees (2026)
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Endorsement application (NJLA portal) | ~$120 |
| IdentoGO fingerprinting (NJ State Police + FBI) | ~$42–50 |
| Nursys electronic verification (if applicable) | $30 |
| Estimated total | ~$192–$200 |
Continuing education for renewal
New Jersey RN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from approved providers. New Jersey designates specific mandatory topic hours within the 30-hour requirement each renewal cycle — verify the current required topics at njconsumeraffairs.gov before renewing, as mandatory categories are updated by board regulation. CE must come from providers approved by a recognized nursing CE accreditor.
Timeline expectations
New Jersey processes complete endorsement applications in approximately 8–12 weeks. Applications requiring paper license verification from non-Nursys states add another 2–4 weeks. New Jersey offers a temporary permit (verify eligibility at njconsumeraffairs.gov), which is valuable for travel nurses who cannot wait 10–16 weeks for a full license. Submit your application and temporary permit request simultaneously.
What we see at Ava Health
New Jersey generates strong nursing demand in our pipeline, particularly from nurses targeting the RWJBarnabas and Hackensack Meridian networks in northern NJ and the AC-area (Virtua, AtlantiCare) in southern NJ. New Jersey's high pay rates — driven partly by proximity to New York City — make it attractive despite the more complex licensing path. Nurses from compact states who get ahead of the application timeline often find NJ to be a high-yield travel destination once the license is in hand.
