Kentucky RN License Guide 2026 — KBN Requirements, NLC Compact & Fees
Is Kentucky an NLC compact state?
Yes. Kentucky is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state. Kentucky-licensed RNs whose primary residence is Kentucky hold a multi-state compact license valid in all 41+ NLC member states. Nurses residing in other compact states may work in Kentucky on their home-state compact privilege without a separate Kentucky license.

Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Kentucky
Step 1 — Verify eligibility and gather documents
You need a nursing degree from a KBN-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your nursing school transcript, a government-issued photo ID, and any criminal history documentation.
Step 2 — Create your KBN online account
Go to kbn.ky.gov and access the online licensing portal. Kentucky processes all RN license applications electronically.
Step 3 — Submit the application and pay the fee
Select "Registered Nurse — Initial License by Examination," complete all required sections, and pay the application fee. Confirm current fee amounts on the KBN website before applying.
Step 4 — Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting
Kentucky requires a fingerprint-based criminal background check through IdentoGO. After submitting your application, KBN provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO location in Kentucky with your service code and photo ID. Fingerprint results are sent directly to KBN.
Step 5 — Official transcripts to KBN
Your nursing school must send sealed official transcripts directly to KBN. Electronic transcripts from Parchment or equivalent services are accepted. International graduates must provide a CGFNS or NACES-member credential evaluation before KBN can complete the review.
Step 6 — Authorization to Test and NCLEX-RN
After KBN approves your application, Pearson VUE issues your ATT. Schedule your NCLEX-RN at any Pearson VUE test center. KBN receives results from Pearson VUE directly — do not treat Quick Results as authorization to practice in Kentucky. Wait for KBN to confirm licensure in the portal.
Step 7 — Receive your compact license
Kentucky processes complete applications in 4–6 weeks. Your Kentucky RN license is a multi-state compact license valid in all NLC member states.
Endorsement into Kentucky from another state
- Submit the "Registered Nurse — License by Endorsement" application and pay the applicable fee.
- KBN uses Nursys for license verification from most states. For non-Nursys states, request a paper verification letter from your current Board addressed to KBN.
- Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting (same process as new graduates).
- Endorsement processing: 3–5 weeks from complete application.
CE requirements for Kentucky RN renewal
Kentucky RNs must complete continuing education as part of biennial license renewal. KBN specifies CE contact hours per 2-year cycle — verify the current requirement and any topic-specific mandates directly at kbn.ky.gov, as requirements are periodically updated by the Kentucky General Assembly and KBN regulations. Kentucky licenses renew on October 31 of even-numbered years (2026, 2028, 2030). Complete CE before the renewal deadline — late renewal results in additional fees and potential license lapse.
Processing times
| Application type | Estimated timeline |
|---|---|
| New graduate (all items received) | 4–6 weeks |
| Endorsement (Nursys state) | 3–5 weeks |
| Endorsement (non-Nursys state) | 4–7 weeks |
| Renewal (online) | 1–3 business days |
Travel nurse tips for Kentucky
Kentucky's nursing market is split between Louisville (the largest city) and Lexington (the second-largest, home to the University of Kentucky), with a significant rural demand across Eastern Kentucky's Appalachian region. Major systems include Norton Healthcare (Louisville), Baptist Health (Louisville, Lexington, and regional campuses), UK HealthCare (Lexington — Level I trauma and academic medical center), University of Louisville Health, and Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) serving eastern Kentucky communities.
- Compact advantage: Nurses in any NLC compact state can work in Kentucky on their existing compact license without a separate Kentucky endorsement — streamlining travel placement significantly.
- UK HealthCare (Lexington): Kentucky's only Level I trauma center and primary academic medical center. Runs consistent specialty travel contracts in ICU, NICU, transplant, and trauma. UK HealthCare credentialing typically completes in 7–10 business days for travel RNs.
- Norton Healthcare (Louisville): Louisville's largest health system; runs travel contracts primarily in med-surg, telemetry, and cardiac across its 5 Louisville-area hospitals.
- Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH): ARH operates 13 hospitals across Eastern Kentucky, serving communities in one of the most medically underserved regions in the United States. Rural eastern Kentucky travel positions carry significant geographic premiums and are consistently difficult to fill — high-pay packages for nurses willing to work in small Appalachian facilities.
- October 31 renewal: Kentucky licenses renew October 31 of even years. Travel nurses mid-contract in Kentucky during October should complete renewal before the end of the month — a lapsed license ends an assignment immediately under most hospital credentialing policies.
What we see at Ava Health
Kentucky is a consistent placement market, particularly for specialty RNs heading to UK HealthCare in Lexington and the Louisville metro hospital network. Eastern Kentucky is one of our highest-premium rural placement regions — ARH facilities and community hospitals in the Appalachian corridor offer some of the most compelling compensation packages in the state for nurses willing to work in non-metro settings. The compact membership means we can route nurses from across the compact network into Kentucky assignments without licensing overhead.
