Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Kentucky

Step 1: Verify eligibility and gather documents

You need a nursing degree from a KBN-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your nursing school transcript, a government-issued photo ID, and any criminal history documentation.

Step 2: Create your KBN online account

Go to kbn.ky.gov and access the online licensing portal. Kentucky processes all RN license applications electronically.

Step 3: Submit the application and pay the fee

Select "Registered Nurse, Initial License by Examination," complete all required sections, and pay the application fee. Confirm current fee amounts on the KBN website before applying.

Step 4: Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting

Kentucky requires a fingerprint-based criminal background check through IdentoGO. After submitting your application, KBN provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO location in Kentucky with your service code and photo ID. Fingerprint results are sent directly to KBN.

Step 5: Official transcripts to KBN

Your nursing school must send sealed official transcripts directly to KBN. Electronic transcripts from Parchment or equivalent services are accepted. International graduates must provide a CGFNS or NACES-member credential evaluation before KBN can complete the review.

Step 6: Authorization to Test and NCLEX-RN

After KBN approves your application, Pearson VUE issues your ATT. Schedule your NCLEX-RN at any Pearson VUE test center. KBN receives results from Pearson VUE directly, do not treat Quick Results as authorization to practice in Kentucky. Wait for KBN to confirm licensure in the portal.
