How to Get Your RN License in Ohio 2026

Ohio is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, meaning RNs who hold a multistate compact license from another NLC state can practice in Ohio without obtaining a separate Ohio license. Ohio joined the enhanced NLC in January 2023. The Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) administers all RN licensure at nursing.ohio.gov.

Are You Already Covered? — Compact vs Non-Compact

If your primary state of residence is an NLC member and you hold a multistate privilege on your license (check Nursys), you can work in Ohio immediately — no endorsement required. You only need an Ohio license if: (1) you plan to make Ohio your primary state of residence, or (2) your current license is from a non-compact state such as California or New York.

Application Steps: Endorsement (Already Licensed)

  1. Create an eLicense Ohio account at elicense.ohio.gov
  2. Submit the RN endorsement application; pay the $75 fee
  3. Request a Verification of Licensure from your current state through Nursys ($30) or direct state board
  4. Submit to a BCI (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and FBI fingerprint-based background check — schedule at OHID or an IdentoGO location ($37 BCI + $23.50 FBI)
  5. If your nursing education was completed outside Ohio, submit official transcripts from your nursing program (required for initial; usually waived for endorsement if your license verifies)
  6. Wait for OBN processing — target 4–8 weeks for endorsement applications

Initial Licensure (First-Time NCLEX Applicants)

  1. Graduate from an accredited nursing program in Ohio or another state
  2. Apply for NCLEX-RN authorization through the OBN via eLicense Ohio — pay the $75 application fee
  3. Register for NCLEX-RN through Pearson VUE ($200 fee) after receiving Authorization to Test (ATT)
  4. Pass NCLEX-RN — schedule at any Pearson VUE center
  5. Complete BCI and FBI fingerprint background check ($60.50 combined)

Fees Summary

ItemFee
RN license application (endorsement or initial)$75
BCI fingerprint background check$37.00
FBI fingerprint background check$23.50
Nursys license verification~$30
NCLEX-RN (initial licensure only)$200
License renewal (every 2 years)$65

Continuing Education Requirements

Ohio RN licenses renew every 2 years on your birth month. No continuing education (CE) hours are currently required by the Ohio Board of Nursing for RN license renewal (unlike most states). Ohio relies on the individual nurse's professional responsibility to maintain competence. That said, many employers require CE as a condition of employment.

Ohio Nursing Market (2026)

Ohio is the 7th most populous US state with major healthcare systems concentrated in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Key employers: Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals (Cleveland), OhioHealth (Columbus), Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Cincinnati Children's, UC Health, and ProMedica (Toledo). Staff RN median salary in Ohio: $72,000–$82,000. Travel RNs in Ohio typically earn $38–$55/hr all-in, with ICU and OR rates at the higher end. The OBN's compact status makes Ohio an accessible destination for travel nurses from other compact states.
