Confirm your compact privilege
Delaware is an NLC compact state. If your primary state of residence is also an NLC compact state, your multi-state license authorizes you to practice in Delaware without a separate endorsement. You may practice immediately under compact privilege.
Determine if you need a Delaware single-state license
If your primary state of residence is NOT an NLC compact state (e.g., California, New York), you must obtain a Delaware single-state license to practice there. Complete the Delaware Board of Nursing endorsement application at dpr.delaware.gov.
Complete the DBON endorsement application
Apply online through Delaware's eLicense portal. Pay the $100 endorsement application fee. Have your current RN license number, Social Security number, and nursing education information available.
Submit license verification through Nursys
Request electronic verification from your current state board through Nursys (nursys.com). Delaware participates in Nursys. States not on Nursys require paper verification sent from the originating board.
Complete criminal background check
Delaware requires a criminal background check via fingerprinting through IdentoGO. Schedule your fingerprinting appointment and submit through the DBON-designated channel.
Await DBON review
The Delaware Board of Nursing processes complete applications in approximately 3-6 weeks. Applications with disciplinary history or background check flags take longer. Monitor your eLicense portal for status updates.
Renew biennially and complete CE
Delaware RN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education. At least 3 hours must be in patient safety. Licenses expire on the last day of the birth month in the renewal year.

Is Delaware an NLC compact state?
Yes. Delaware joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2020. Nurses whose primary state of residence is another NLC compact state may practice in Delaware under compact privilege without obtaining a separate Delaware license. For travel nurses from compact states, Delaware assignments require no additional licensing steps, your multi-state license covers you.
Nurses from non-compact states (California, New York, Illinois, etc.) must obtain a Delaware single-state license via endorsement before practicing in Delaware.
