Florida RN License 2026 — BON Endorsement, NLC Compact & Timeline

Florida is one of the fastest-growing healthcare markets in the United States, driven by population growth and an aging demographic. Major health systems including AdventHealth, HCA Healthcare, BayCare, Tampa General Hospital, Baptist Health, and NCH operate across the state. The Florida Board of Nursing, part of the Florida Department of Health, administers RN licensure at flhealthsource.gov.

Is Florida an NLC compact state?

Yes. Florida is an NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact) member. If Florida is your primary state of residence and you hold a Florida RN license, you hold a multistate license valid in all other NLC compact states. Nurses licensed in other compact states who maintain residency there may work in Florida under their home-state compact privilege without a separate Florida license — unless they permanently relocate to Florida.

Endorsement fees (2026)

ItemFee
Endorsement application (MQA Online)$100
IdentoGO fingerprinting (background check)~$42.50
Nursys electronic verification (if applicable)$30
Estimated total~$142–$172

Continuing education for renewal

Florida RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the birth month in even or odd years depending on the licensee's birthday. Renewal requires 24 contact hours of continuing education. Florida mandates specific topic hours within that total each renewal cycle; required topics have included HIV/AIDS awareness, domestic violence, prevention of medical errors, and Florida laws and rules applicable to nursing. Check the BON website at flhealthsource.gov for the current mandatory topic breakdown before renewing — requirements vary by renewal cycle and BON rulemaking.

Timeline expectations

Florida BON processes complete endorsement applications — electronic Nursys verification + cleared background check — in 4–8 weeks. Applications requiring paper verification from non-Nursys states or flagged for disclosure review take longer. Florida does not issue temporary permits for RNs pending endorsement, so time your application to ensure your license is active before your target start date.

What we see at Ava Health

Florida is our single largest state by nurse candidate volume — thousands of nurses in our pipeline hold Florida licenses or are targeting Florida assignments. Demand is highest in the Tampa Bay area, Miami-Dade, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Naples/Fort Myers markets. Sign-on bonuses for ICU, OR, L&D, and ER RNs at Florida health systems have remained elevated since 2022, particularly at NCH and AdventHealth facilities. Florida's NLC compact status makes it a straightforward destination for travel nurses from other compact states.
