West Virginia CRNAs are licensed as APRNs by the WV Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses. West Virginia is a reduced practice state — a written collaborative agreement with a physician is required. West Virginia has NOT opted out of the federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement. WVU Medicine (Morgantown) and Charleston Area Medical Center are the primary academic employers; rural Appalachian communities throughout Southern and Eastern West Virginia have persistent CRNA shortages that are among the most severe in the nation.

Practice Model

  • Written collaborative agreement with physician required
  • West Virginia has NOT opted out of federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement
  • ACT model: WVU Medicine (Morgantown), CAMC (Charleston)
  • CRNA-independent (with collaborative agreement): Thomas Health, Appalachian Regional Healthcare WV sites, rural CAH facilities
  • Southern WV coal country (Logan, Mingo, McDowell counties) has critical CRNA and healthcare provider shortages

Application Requirements

  • Active West Virginia RN license (compact or WV-issued)
  • Current NBCRNA certification
  • Official nurse anesthesia program documentation
  • Completed WV Board application + $125 fee
  • Criminal background check via WV State Police

Processing Timeline

WV Board of Examiners processes APRN applications in 6–10 weeks from complete submission. West Virginia's background check process through the State Police is efficient; complete applications process without significant delays.

NHSC Loan Repayment Opportunity

West Virginia has more HPSA-designated communities per capita than almost any other state. CRNAs serving at NHSC-eligible facilities in rural WV can qualify for up to $50,000 in tax-exempt loan repayment for a 2-year service commitment. This is particularly relevant for new CRNA graduates with student loan burdens — Southern WV positions with NHSC repayment can offer effective first-year total compensation exceeding $230,000 when loan forgiveness is factored in.

What We See at Ava Health

West Virginia's CRNA market is defined by contrast: WVU Medicine and CAMC offer stable academic/community positions at standard Appalachian compensation, while Southern and Eastern WV's rural communities have some of the most acute healthcare shortages in the country. CRNAs willing to practice in rural WV can access NHSC loan repayment, signing bonuses, and housing assistance that substantially increase effective total compensation. Cost of living in rural WV is extremely low — $185K in Logan County goes considerably further than $220K in Chicago.
