How to Get a Speech-Language Pathologist License in California (2026)
California does not participate in the interstate SLP Compact (ASLP-IC), which means every applicant — regardless of their home state — must complete the full California endorsement process through the CA Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BSLA). The process takes 8–12 weeks and carries a ~$200 fee, but California's compensation ceiling is among the highest in the nation. Landmark employers including Kaiser Permanente, UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Health Care, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and Cedars-Sinai all require a valid California license before the first day of clinical practice.
California SLP license at a glance
- Issuing board: CA Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BSLA)
- SLP Compact member: No
- Endorsement processing: 8–12 weeks
- Application fee: ~$200
- ASHA CCC-SLP required: Yes (required by most employers)
SLP Compact vs. full endorsement
Because California has not joined the SLP Compact, there is no abbreviated pathway — everyone completes the same full endorsement track. Begin by creating an account on the BSLA's online portal and submitting the application with the ~$200 fee. Required documentation includes official graduate-level transcripts (sent directly from your institution), verification of your Clinical Fellowship Year, current ASHA CCC-SLP certification, and license verification from every state where you hold or have ever held an SLP license.
California also requires Live Scan fingerprinting for a criminal background check — this must be completed at an approved California Live Scan site or, for out-of-state applicants, via a Request for Live Scan Service card submitted to a participating vendor. The fingerprint results are forwarded electronically to the Board. Incomplete applications and fingerprint delays are the most common causes of processing exceeding the 12-week window. California does not issue a temporary permit during processing, so applicants should plan their start dates accordingly.

Where SLP demand is highest in California
The Los Angeles metro hosts the state's deepest SLP job market, anchored by Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a dense network of outpatient and private-practice providers serving a massive pediatric and adult caseload. The Bay Area is California's second major hub, with UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Health Care, and Kaiser Permanente's Northern California region collectively maintaining significant SLP staff across acute care, dysphagia, and outpatient rehabilitation. San Diego rounds out the major markets, with UC San Diego Health and a thriving private-practice sector driven by military-family demand from the Camp Pendleton and Naval bases.
Bottom line
California's non-compact status demands patience — budget a full 8–12 weeks and plan your employment start date accordingly. That investment pays off in some of the highest SLP compensation in the country, with hospital roles regularly clearing $110K and travel contracts topping $128K including stipends. Start your BSLA application and Live Scan fingerprinting as early as possible to avoid delaying your first day of practice.
