How to Get a Physical Therapist License in New York (2026)

New York is one of the few remaining states that has not joined the PT Compact as of 2026 — a notable limitation for travel PTs and those relocating from other states, as it means full endorsement is required regardless of where your primary license was issued. The NY State Education Department's Office of the Professions handles PT licensing with approximately 8–10 weeks of processing time. Despite this friction, New York's sheer scale and compensation levels make it one of the most important PT markets in the country.

  • Issuing board: NY State Education Department — Office of the Professions
  • PT Compact member: No
  • Compact Privilege processing: N/A
  • Endorsement processing: 8–10 weeks
  • Application fee: ~$157
  • Jurisprudence exam: Not required

PT Compact vs. full endorsement

Because New York has not joined the PT Compact, every applicant — including those with Compact-eligible licenses in other states — must complete full endorsement. Plan for 8–10 weeks: submit the NY SED online application, provide FSBPT score verification, complete a background check, and pay the ~$157 fee. No jurisprudence exam is required, which removes one time-sink from the process.

Where PT demand is highest in New York

NYC metro (highest density in the state): NYU Langone Health, NewYork-Presbyterian (Weill Cornell + Columbia), Mount Sinai Health System, Northwell Health (21 hospitals), and Montefiore Medical Center all run large PT departments with active recruiting pipelines. Rochester: Rochester Regional Health and UR Medicine (URMC). Buffalo: Kaleida Health and Catholic Health. Albany/Capital Region: Albany Medical Center. Syracuse: SUNY Upstate Medical University. Upstate markets offer lower cost of living with substantially less competition than NYC.

Bottom line

New York's non-Compact status adds 8–10 weeks of licensing lead time — plan accordingly before accepting offers or travel contracts. Once licensed, the NYC metro delivers some of the highest PT salaries in the country. Upstate markets (Rochester, Buffalo, Albany) offer an appealing balance: academic medical center access, lower COL, and less recruiter competition.
