How to Get a Physical Therapist License in Florida (2026)
Florida is one of the strongest PT job markets in the United States — large aging-in-place population, dense outpatient clinic network (PT Solutions, ATI, Bayview Physical Therapy, Select Medical, Kindred at Home), and a 2026 PT shortage that pushed comp 5-9% above national medians. Licensure in Florida is now significantly faster for out-of-state PTs because Florida is a member of the PT Compact (effective 2022) — most PTs from Compact member states can practice in Florida within 24-72 hours via a Compact Privilege.

The two paths: PT Compact vs. full endorsement
Path 1 — PT Compact Privilege (preferred when applicable)
If you hold an active, unencumbered PT license in any PT Compact member state (32+ states as of 2026 including TX, NC, GA, AZ, CO, MO, TN, SC, KY, MS, OK, UT, VA, WA, OR, NJ, MN, MD, IA, IN, NE, NH, ND, NM, NV, RI, WV, AR, ID, KS, ME, LA, MI, MT, OH, SD, WY) and your primary state of residence is a Compact state:
- Visit ptcompact.org
- Verify your home state is "Compact-eligible" (some states are Compact members but not yet issuing privileges)
- Pay Compact fee ($45) + Florida state fee (~$50)
- Privilege issued within 1-3 business days
The Compact Privilege is renewable, tied to your home-state license, and lets you practice in any PT Compact member state without a separate endorsement.
Path 2 — Full Florida endorsement
For PTs from non-Compact states (CA, NY, MA, etc.) or Compact-eligible states where the PT prefers a full FL license:
Step-by-step Florida endorsement (Path 2)
1. NPTE verification
Request FSBPT send your NPTE score directly to Florida FBPT. Minimum score: 600. Most PTs licensed in another state already meet this threshold.
2. License history verification
Submit verification of every PT license you've held — current state and any prior states. Most boards charge $25-40 per verification.
3. Florida endorsement application
File via the Florida Department of Health Medical Quality Assurance (MQA) online services portal. Application fee: $205. Add the initial license + Unlicensed Activity fee (~$50) when prompted.
4. Florida Laws and Rules examination
Untimed, open-book online exam covering Florida-specific PT regulations. ~$50 fee. 75% to pass. Most PTs pass first try with a study guide.
5. Fingerprinting
Florida requires FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) + FBI fingerprint-based background check via Live Scan. Schedule at an approved provider. Results post to FBPT in 2-3 weeks.
6. License issuance
Once all components in (NPTE verification, prior-state verifications, application, exam, background check), FBPT typically issues in 6-10 weeks. Track via the FL DOH license lookup portal.

Common questions
Should I do PT Compact or full endorsement? If you're from a Compact state, do the Compact Privilege — it's 1-3 days vs 6-10 weeks. The only reason to do full endorsement is if your home state is non-Compact (CA, NY, MA), you're moving permanent residence to FL, or you want a "permanent" FL license that won't lapse if your home-state license does.
Does Florida require continuing education for PTs? Yes — 24 CEUs every 2 years for license renewal, including 2 hours of FL-specific laws and rules content.
Can I work as a travel PT in Florida via the Compact? Yes — most travel PT agencies (Aureus, Med Travelers, AMN Healthcare) accept Compact privileges for FL assignments. Compact privilege turnaround is 1-3 days, so you can start an assignment within a week of accepting.
Bottom line
Florida PT licensure is fast (1-3 days via Compact, 6-10 weeks via endorsement), well-paid ($85-105K depending on setting), and has the highest PT job density in the southeast. SW Florida and Tampa Bay have the strongest demand and offer the highest sign-on bonuses.
