PMHN-BC Certification: The RN-BC Premium
The ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing board certification (PMHN-BC) is the primary credential for psychiatric RNs. Eligibility: current RN license + 2 years full-time experience + 2,000 hours in PMHN specialty. Exam: $295 (ANCC member) / $395 (non-member). Recertification every 5 years.
The PMHN-BC typically adds $4,000–$7,000/year to base salary. Many inpatient psych units make it a condition of advancement to senior or charge RN roles. State psychiatric hospitals often tie certification to step increases in union pay scales.
The Mental Health Nursing Shortage
Psychiatric nursing has one of the most acute supply-demand imbalances in nursing: historically lower compensation discouraged entry; high burnout in inpatient settings; limited psych clinical training in standard nursing programs; and a post-COVID surge in behavioral health demand with no corresponding supply increase. Many inpatient psych units run short-staffed, raising per-nurse pay through overtime and differential loading, and making travel psychiatric nursing one of the highest-demand traveler specialties.
Travel Psychiatric Nursing
2026 travel psych RN rates: inpatient psych $1,700–$2,300/week; forensic psychiatric $1,900–$2,500/week; crisis/ED psychiatric $2,000–$2,600/week. California, New York, and Massachusetts consistently post the highest travel psych rates.
