Physical Therapy Assistant Career Guide 2026: NPTE-PTA, Salary & Career Path
What Is a Physical Therapy Assistant?
A physical therapy assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist (PT) to implement the physical therapy plan of care. PTAs perform therapeutic exercises, manual techniques, modalities (ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat/cold), gait training, and functional mobility interventions with patients across all age groups and diagnoses. They document patient progress, communicate findings to the supervising PT, and educate patients and families on home exercise programs.
PTAs are distinctly different from physical therapy aides (unlicensed support personnel who assist with non-clinical tasks) — PTAs are licensed healthcare professionals who deliver hands-on patient care. The distinction matters for scope of practice, pay, and career advancement.
PTA Salary in 2026
| Setting | Florida Hourly | National Median Annual | Top 25% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outpatient Clinic | $28–$38/hr | $58,000–$70,000 | $80,000+ |
| Hospital (Inpatient Rehab) | $30–$40/hr | $62,000–$75,000 | $85,000+ |
| SNF / Long-Term Care | $30–$42/hr | $62,000–$78,000 | $88,000+ |
| Home Health | $32–$44/hr | $65,000–$80,000 | $90,000+ |
| School System | $27–$35/hr | $56,000–$68,000 | $75,000+ |
| Travel PTA | $1,600–$2,400/week all-in | — | |
SNF and home health PTAs tend to earn more than outpatient clinic PTAs in Florida, due to productivity-based pay models. Travel PTAs — particularly those willing to take SNF assignments in rural areas — can earn well above these medians.
Education and Licensing Requirements
Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assisting (AAS-PTA)
The entry-level educational requirement is an associate's degree from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education). These programs are typically 2 years full-time, combining academic coursework with 16 weeks of full-time clinical education (clinical rotations). Florida has numerous accredited PTA programs: Hillsborough Community College, Valencia College, Florida SouthWestern State College, Keiser University, and others.
NPTE-PTA: National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs
Graduates must pass the NPTE-PTA, administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). The exam covers physical therapy content across musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, integumentary, and other systems, with PTA-specific scope-of-practice framing. Pass rates for first-time test-takers are approximately 90%.
Florida PTA Licensure
After passing the NPTE-PTA, graduates apply to the Florida Board of Physical Therapy Practice for state licensure. Florida's application process typically takes 4–8 weeks. Florida requires 24 continuing education hours per 2-year renewal cycle, including 3 hours in prevention of medical errors.
PTA vs. PT: Understanding the Distinction
| Factor | Physical Therapist (PT) | Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) — 3 years post-bachelor | Associate's Degree (AAS) — 2 years |
| Scope | Full evaluation, diagnosis, plan of care creation | Treatment implementation under PT supervision |
| Starting salary | $75,000–$90,000 | $55,000–$68,000 |
| Time to licensure | ~5–7 years post-HS | ~2–3 years post-HS |
| Debt load | $90,000–$200,000 (DPT) | $20,000–$50,000 (AAS) |
The PTA career offers a favorable return on investment: significantly less educational debt than a DPT, faster entry into the workforce, and competitive salary. For students who want to work in physical therapy without the 7-year educational commitment and substantial debt load of a DPT, the PTA pathway is compelling.
Day in the Life: SNF and Outpatient PTA
SNF PTA (Long-Term Care)
- See 10–14 patients daily in 30–45 minute sessions
- Focus: functional mobility restoration, fall prevention, post-surgical rehab (hip/knee replacements are common), stroke recovery
- Productivity expectations are high (often 80–90% productivity required); this is the most productivity-pressured PTA setting
- Documentation: complete treatment notes within the same day; therapy documentation in SNFs directly impacts Medicare reimbursement
Outpatient Clinic PTA
- See 8–12 patients daily (30–60 minute sessions)
- Focus: orthopedic rehabilitation (sports injuries, post-surgical, chronic pain), neurologic PT, pediatric PT (some clinics)
- More time per patient, lower production pressure than SNF
- PTA works closely with supervising PT who conducts the initial evaluation and re-evaluations
Career Advancement for PTAs
PTAs face a ceiling in clinical advancement — the PT-PTA distinction is regulatory, not just hierarchical. Advancement paths:
- Lead PTA / Clinical Coordinator: Supervisory role over other PTAs and aides at a facility
- Director of Rehab (in some SNF settings): Management of therapy services; requires experience and often additional training
- Bridge to DPT: Many accredited DPT programs accept PTAs and award credit for prior clinical experience. For PTAs who decide they want to practice at the PT level, this is the pathway
- Travel PTA: High demand in SNF and home health settings nationally; strong for earnings growth
- Specialty Certifications: APTA offers specialist certifications (OCS, NCS, etc.) that are technically designed for PTs but PTAs can sometimes pursue continuing education in specialty areas to improve clinical skills even if the formal specialist title is PT-level
Florida PTA Job Market in 2026
Florida's SNF sector is among the largest in the country, driven by the state's retiree population. Southwest Florida (Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs) has a particularly high concentration of skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies that continuously recruit PTAs. Lee Health's rehabilitation services, NCH rehabilitation programs, and the many independently operated outpatient clinics in the region are active employers. New grad PTAs in Florida with CAPTE-accredited degrees and Florida licensure typically find positions within 1–3 months of passing the NPTE-PTA.
