Physical Therapist Salary in 2026

Physical therapists (PTs) diagnose and treat movement disorders, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, and post-surgical rehabilitation. The DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) has been the entry-level degree since 2015, positioning PTs as doctoral-level clinicians — yet PT compensation lags behind the clinical depth of the profession, particularly in outpatient private practice. Understanding the salary variation by setting and specialty is critical for PTs evaluating their next move.

Physical Therapist Salary by Setting

SettingAvg Annual SalaryRange
Outpatient orthopedic clinic (new grad)$65,000–$75,000$60K–$82K
Outpatient orthopedic PT (3–7 years)$72,000–$88,000$65K–$98K
Hospital acute care PT$78,000–$95,000$70K–$108K
Home health PT$80,000–$105,000$72K–$118K
Skilled nursing facility (SNF) PT$72,000–$92,000$65K–$105K
Sports / orthopedic specialist PT$82,000–$105,000$72K–$120K
PT — academic / university$75,000–$95,000$68K–$108K
Travel PT$95,000–$130,000$85K–$148K

Home health premium: Home health physical therapy is consistently the highest-paying outpatient PT setting. PTs see patients in their homes, often managing their own schedule and patient panels. Productivity-based pay in home health ($50–$70/visit) can produce $95,000–$118,000 annually for productive PTs. The trade-off: independent work environment with driving between visits.

North Carolina$72,000–$92,000Lower COL; active regional systems

DPT vs PT: The Credential Landscape

All new PT graduates hold the DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) since 2015. PTs who graduated before 2015 may hold a master's (MPT) or bachelor's (BPT) in physical therapy — these are still licensed clinicians but the DPT is now the expected entry-level credential. Salary is not significantly affected by degree level once licensed; clinical experience drives compensation more than degree type.

Specialty certifications that do drive pay:

  • OCS (Orthopedic Certified Specialist): ABPTS specialty cert; premium of $3,000–$6,000/year at orthopedic practices
  • SCS (Sports Certified Specialist): For sports medicine-focused PTs; valued at sports medicine programs and team settings
  • NCS (Neurologic Certified Specialist): Stroke, TBI, neuro rehab specialty; valued at hospital neuro units
  • GCS (Geriatric Certified Specialist): Valued at SNF and home health settings

Physical Therapist Job Market in 2026

PT demand remains positive in 2026. Aging population demographics increase musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation needs. The home health PT market is particularly active — the shift to home-based care across Medicare and commercial insurance has expanded home health PT volumes, and home health agencies are frequently the highest-paying PT employers for experienced clinicians.

Florida is an active PT market driven by the state's large retired population. Older adults require PT services at significantly higher rates than younger populations (post-joint-replacement rehab, fall prevention, neurological rehabilitation for stroke survivors). Health systems and home health agencies across the state recruit PTs and are particularly active in Southwest Florida where the older demographic concentration is highest.
