North Dakota RN License Guide 2026 — NLC Compact, Endorsement & NDBON
Is North Dakota an NLC compact state?
Yes. North Dakota was an original member of the NLC compact. Compact-licensed RNs from other NLC states can practice in North Dakota without a separate license. North Dakota is a key destination in the Midwest travel nursing circuit alongside Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska — all compact states.
NDBON fees (2026)
- Endorsement application: $100
- Background check: ~$58
- Biennial renewal: $90
North Dakota as a Travel Nursing Market
North Dakota generates substantial travel nursing demand relative to its population, driven by Sanford Health (the state's largest health system, headquartered in Fargo), Essentia Health (northwest ND), and CHI St. Alexius Health (Bismarck). Rural critical access hospitals throughout the state consistently post travel contracts. The oil patch communities in the Williston Basin have historically paid premium rates for travel nurses willing to work in remote western ND.
North Dakota also has strong demand for CRNAs and specialized surgical nursing in rural settings where permanent staffing is limited.
CE Requirements
North Dakota requires 12 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle. This is one of the lower CE requirements in the country. At least some hours must include required topics (verify current requirements at ndbon.org).
