North Carolina RN License 2026 — NCBON Endorsement, Fees & Timeline
North Carolina is one of the Southeast's fastest-growing healthcare markets, anchored by major systems including Duke University Health, UNC Health, Atrium Health, WakeMed, Novant Health, and Vidant Health. The North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) administers RN licensure at ncbon.com under North Carolina General Statute 90-171.
Is North Carolina an NLC compact state?
Yes. North Carolina is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member. North Carolina RN licenses issued to NC residents are multistate licenses, valid in all other NLC compact states. Nurses licensed in other compact states who maintain residency there may work in North Carolina under their home-state compact privilege without obtaining a separate NC license.
Endorsement fees (2026)
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Endorsement application (NCBON portal) | ~$75 |
| Fingerprinting / criminal background check | ~$38–50 |
| Nursys electronic verification (if applicable) | $30 |
| Estimated total | ~$143–$155 |

Continuing education for renewal
North Carolina RN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from approved providers. North Carolina does not impose a state-mandated topic requirement beyond what individual employers may require, but NCBON may audit CE records — retain all CE certificates for at least 4 years. The renewal period runs from the date of issuance and is tracked through the NCBON online portal.
Timeline expectations
Complete endorsement applications with Nursys electronic verification and cleared background checks typically process in 4–8 weeks. Paper verification from non-Nursys states adds 2–3 weeks. NCBON does not issue temporary permits; plan your application timing to ensure your license is active before your target start date at a North Carolina facility.
What we see at Ava Health
North Carolina is a growing priority market in our recruitment pipeline. The Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) drives demand at UNC Health and Duke — particularly in ICU, oncology, and OR specialties. Charlotte-area facilities (Atrium Health, Novant) are consistently active in nursing recruitment. North Carolina's compact status makes it a straightforward destination for nurses already holding multistate licenses from other compact states, which significantly shortens the path to a first assignment.
