Kentucky's healthcare market is anchored by UK HealthCare in Lexington and large Louisville-based health systems, with strong demand for pharmacists in both academic medical and community health settings.

Pharmacist Licensing Requirements in Kentucky

All pharmacists licensed in Kentucky must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited program, pass the NAPLEX, and pass the MPJE jurisprudence examination. The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy requires 1,500 verified intern hours and is one of the most streamlined state boards for new graduate applications.

Step-by-Step: Kentucky Pharmacist License Process

  1. Create your NABP e-Profile — Register at nabp.pharmacy ($35). Your e-Profile links your exam records to the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy application system.
  2. Complete 1,500 intern hours — Hours must be supervised by a Kentucky-licensed pharmacist in a Board-approved practice site. Both experiential education rotations and pre-APPE intern hours count.
  3. Pass the NAPLEX — Register through NABP ($695) and schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE center. The exam is computer-adaptive and tests clinical pharmacy competency. Passing score: 75.
  4. Pass the MPJE — Register through NABP (~$150). The Kentucky MPJE covers KRS Chapter 315 (Kentucky pharmacy law), the Kentucky Controlled Substances Act, and applicable federal DEA regulations.
  5. Submit the Kentucky Board application — Complete the online application on the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy website. Pay the ~$100 fee. Upload official PharmD transcripts, NABP exam scores, and notarized intern hour affidavit.
  6. Complete a background check — Submit fingerprints through the Kentucky State Police or a Board-approved vendor (~$50-75). Criminal background results are reviewed before licensure approval.
  7. Receive your Kentucky pharmacist license — Kentucky Board issues licenses within 2-4 weeks of receiving a complete application. Licenses renew January 31 on a biennial cycle.
  8. Register with the DEA — Apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years). Kentucky pharmacists must query KASPER before dispensing Schedule II and III opioids to patients without a recent dispensing history.

Fees and Timeline

ItemFee
NABP e-Profile$35
NAPLEX$695
MPJE~$150
Kentucky Board application~$100
Background check~$50-75
Total estimated~$1,030-1,055

NAPLEX Score Transfer

Kentucky accepts NABP score transfers for pharmacists currently licensed in another jurisdiction. The $50 transfer fee is paid through your NABP e-Profile, and scores must be within 3 years. Even with a score transfer, you must pass the Kentucky MPJE before the Board will issue a Kentucky license.

DEA Registration

After receiving your Kentucky pharmacist license, apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years) to dispense controlled substances. The KASPER system is one of the most actively enforced PMP programs in the country — Kentucky pharmacists are required to review KASPER for all Schedule II and III opioid prescriptions.

Continuing Education Requirements

Kentucky requires 30 contact hours of ACPE-accredited CE per biennial renewal period. Pharmacists must complete at least 3 hours in drug therapy topics and 1 hour specifically covering Kentucky pharmacy law. CE completion is verified via CPE Monitor at renewal.
