Kansas offers stable healthcare employment anchored by the University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City and regional systems in Wichita and Topeka, with growing demand for clinical and community pharmacists.

Pharmacist Licensing Requirements in Kansas

All pharmacists licensed in Kansas must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited program, pass the NAPLEX, and pass the MPJE jurisprudence examination. The Kansas Board of Pharmacy requires 1,500 verified intern hours and administers all licensure through its online portal.

Step-by-Step: Kansas Pharmacist License Process

  1. Create your NABP e-Profile — Register at nabp.pharmacy ($35). An active NABP e-Profile is required to register for NAPLEX and MPJE for Kansas licensure.
  2. Complete 1,500 intern hours — Hours must be supervised by a Kansas-licensed pharmacist in an approved setting: retail, hospital, ambulatory, compounding, or long-term care pharmacy.
  3. Pass the NAPLEX — Apply through NABP ($695). The exam is 250 adaptive questions. Passing score is 75. Kansas law requires the NAPLEX to be passed within 3 attempts within 3 years.
  4. Pass the MPJE — Apply through NABP (~$150). The Kansas MPJE covers the Kansas Pharmacy Act, the Kansas Uniform Controlled Substances Act, and federal DEA regulations.
  5. Submit the Kansas Board application — Complete the online application on the Kansas Board of Pharmacy website. Pay the ~$100 fee and submit official transcripts, exam score reports, and intern hour affidavit.
  6. Complete a background check — Fingerprint-based background check through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation or approved vendor (~$50-75). Results are sent directly to the Board.
  7. Receive your Kansas pharmacist license — The Board reviews complete applications and issues licenses within 2-4 weeks. Kansas pharmacist licenses renew January 31 on a biennial basis.
  8. Register with the DEA — Apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years). Kansas pharmacists are required to query the Kansas Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) before dispensing Schedule II-IV opioids.

DEA Registration

After receiving your Kansas pharmacist license, apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years) to dispense controlled substances. Kansas law requires PMP queries before dispensing opioids and Schedule II-IV drugs in most clinical settings. Kansas pharmacists may also apply for a mid-level practitioner DEA number in collaborative practice settings.

Continuing Education Requirements

Kansas requires 30 contact hours of ACPE-accredited CE per biennial renewal period. At least 1 hour must cover pharmacy law updates and 1 hour must address substance use disorder or opioid prescribing. All CE is submitted through CPE Monitor and verified at license renewal.
