Indiana's healthcare landscape is driven by large integrated health systems in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and South Bend, with growing demand for clinical and hospital pharmacists across the state.

Pharmacist Licensing Requirements in Indiana

All pharmacists licensed in Indiana must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited program, pass the NAPLEX, and pass the MPJE jurisprudence examination. The Indiana Board of Pharmacy (administered through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency) requires 1,500 verified intern hours prior to licensure.

Step-by-Step: Indiana Pharmacist License Process

  1. Create your NABP e-Profile — Register at nabp.pharmacy ($35). All NAPLEX and MPJE registrations for Indiana candidates flow through the NABP system.
  2. Complete 1,500 intern hours — Complete supervised intern hours in hospital, retail, long-term care, or ambulatory pharmacy settings. Your PharmD program certifies hours and submits them via NABP.
  3. Pass the NAPLEX — Apply through NABP ($695). The adaptive exam tests drug therapy knowledge, pharmaceutical calculations, and patient safety. Minimum passing score: 75.
  4. Pass the MPJE — Apply through NABP (~$150). The Indiana MPJE covers the Indiana Pharmacy Practice Act, controlled substance scheduling, and collaborative pharmacy practice agreements.
  5. Submit the Indiana Board application — Apply online through IPLA (pla.in.gov). Pay the ~$100 application fee. Submit official PharmD transcripts, NAPLEX and MPJE scores, and certified intern hour documentation.
  6. Complete a background check — Fingerprint-based background check through an approved vendor (~$50-75). Indiana Board reviews any criminal history and may request additional documentation.
  7. Receive your Indiana pharmacist license — License issued after Board approval of your complete application. Indiana pharmacist licenses expire July 1 annually; CE must be complete before renewal.
  8. Register with the DEA — Apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years). Indiana pharmacists must check the Indiana INSPECT prescription monitoring program before dispensing Schedule II-IV controlled substances.

Fees and Timeline

ItemFee
NABP e-Profile$35
NAPLEX$695
MPJE~$150
Indiana Board application~$100
Background check~$50-75
Total estimated~$1,030-1,055

NAPLEX Score Transfer

Indiana accepts NABP score transfers for pharmacists who are already licensed in another state and passed the NAPLEX within the past 3 years. The $50 transfer fee is paid through your NABP e-Profile. You must still sit for the Indiana MPJE even with a score transfer.

DEA Registration

After receiving your Indiana pharmacist license, apply for DEA registration (~$888 for 3 years) to dispense controlled substances. Indiana requires pharmacists to query the INSPECT PMP before dispensing opioids, benzodiazepines, and other Schedule II-IV medications. Non-compliance is grounds for Board action.

Continuing Education Requirements

Indiana requires 30 contact hours of ACPE-accredited CE annually for pharmacist license renewal. A minimum of 3 hours must cover patient safety topics. CE must be completed through accredited providers and recorded via CPE Monitor. Indiana conducts annual CE audits.
