Idaho RN License Guide 2026 — IBN Requirements, Compact Status & Fees
Is Idaho an NLC compact state?
Yes. Idaho is one of the original members of the Nurse Licensure Compact, having joined in 2001 — among the first wave of states to adopt multi-state nursing licensure. The Idaho Board of Nursing (IBN) issues multi-state RN licenses to nurses whose primary state of residence is Idaho. If you already hold a multi-state license issued by another compact state, you can practice in Idaho assignments without a separate ID license — compact privileges are immediate when your home state is a compact member.
IBN fees at a glance (2026)
- Initial license by endorsement: Verify current fee at ibn.idaho.gov (approximately $90–$100)
- Initial license by examination (NCLEX): IBN application fee plus Pearson VUE fee of $200
- Biennial renewal: Verify at ibn.idaho.gov before submitting renewal
- Nursys verification: ~$30 per originating state
- IdentoGO fingerprinting: ~$38–$50
IBN fees are subject to change; always confirm current amounts on the board's official website before submitting payment.
Background check and fingerprinting
IBN requires electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO using the IBN-specific service code available at ibn.idaho.gov. Background checks run through the Idaho State Police and the FBI. Results are transmitted directly to IBN within 2–4 weeks of fingerprinting. As with all state boards: proactively disclose any prior criminal history on your application. Misdemeanor offenses and past disciplinary actions require additional documentation, but transparent disclosure with context is treated more favorably than history that surfaces unexplained in the background check.
Endorsement timeline
Idaho endorsement typically processes in 4–7 weeks when all components are submitted simultaneously. The endorsement pipeline runs most efficiently when you submit your application, Nursys verification request, and IdentoGO appointment within the same week — sequential submission turns each step into a waiting period that extends total processing time unnecessarily.
- Application + fee: Day 1
- Nursys verification request: Day 1
- IdentoGO fingerprinting appointment: Within first week
- Background check return: 2–3 weeks after fingerprinting
- License issue: 4–7 weeks total from complete application
Continuing competency requirements
Verify current Idaho continuing education and competency requirements directly on ibn.idaho.gov before submitting renewal. CE requirements in Idaho have evolved over recent cycles and the board's website is the authoritative source. Retain certificates of completion for any completed CE in case of an audit notice. If you have any doubt about your renewal documentation, contact IBN directly — the board staff can confirm exactly what is required for your specific renewal cycle.
Temporary practice permit
Nurses applying for endorsement who need to work in Idaho before full license issuance should inquire about temporary practice permit availability when submitting their application. IBN has historically offered temporary permits; confirm current availability and process at ibn.idaho.gov at the time of your application, as permit policies can change.
Travel nursing in Idaho: demand and market overview
Idaho's healthcare market is driven primarily by St. Luke's Health System and St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, both headquartered in the Boise metro, along with Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (Idaho Falls), Kootenai Health (Coeur d'Alene), and a network of rural critical access hospitals across the state's vast geography. Travel nurse demand is consistent in ICU, ER, labor and delivery, and med-surg, with particular shortages in rural and Eastern Idaho communities that serve large agricultural and outdoor-recreation populations.
Idaho's NLC compact membership makes it a natural stop on the Mountain West travel circuit — nurses holding multi-state licenses from Utah, Nevada, Colorado, or Washington can accept Idaho assignments under existing compact privileges. The Boise metro has grown substantially over the past decade, and healthcare infrastructure investment has tracked that population growth, creating a sustained demand for experienced clinical nurses.
What we see at Ava Health
Idaho placements come primarily through the Mountain West compact corridor — nurses based in Utah or Nevada picking up Boise or Twin Falls assignments under their existing multi-state license. For nurses whose primary residence is Idaho and who want to expand their travel range, the endorsement process is standard compact protocol: same-day application, Nursys, and fingerprinting submission, followed by a 4–6 week processing window with IBN.
