Pharmacist License in California 2026: NAPLEX, CPJE, Board Requirements
California is the largest pharmacy job market in the United States, with over 40 million residents, major academic medical centers, and integrated health systems like Kaiser Permanente driving demand for pharmacists across every specialty — and the highest pharmacist salaries in the nation to match.
Pharmacist Licensing Requirements in California
All pharmacists licensed in California must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited program, pass the NAPLEX, and pass the CPJE (California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination). California does NOT use the MPJE — the CPJE is California's own jurisprudence exam covering California-specific pharmacy law and practice standards. California does not allow NAPLEX score transfers; every applicant must take the NAPLEX regardless of prior licensure in other states.
Step-by-Step: California Pharmacist License Process
- Create your NABP e-Profile — Fee: $35. Register at nabp.pharmacy. California's Board uses NABP score reports for the NAPLEX portion of licensure.
- Apply for a California intern license (if needed) — If completing intern hours in California, obtain a Pharmacist Intern license from the California Board of Pharmacy. California interns may work only under the direct supervision of a licensed California pharmacist.
- Confirm 1,500 intern hours are documented — California requires 1,500 hours of supervised pharmacy internship experience. Your college of pharmacy and your supervising pharmacist must both certify your hours to the Board. Allow extra time for this verification step, as discrepancies can delay your application.
- Register for and pass the NAPLEX — Fee: $695. After NABP authorization, schedule your NAPLEX at a Pearson VUE center. California has testing locations in all major metros. The NAPLEX score is sent directly to NABP and reported to the California Board as part of your licensure file.
- Register for and pass the CPJE — The CPJE is administered by the California Board of Pharmacy, not NABP. The CPJE tests California Business and Professions Code, California Code of Regulations (Title 16), and California pharmacy practice standards. This exam is not available in other states and cannot be waived. Study California-specific review materials in addition to general pharmacy law resources.
- Submit the California Board application — Apply through the California Board of Pharmacy online. The application fee is approximately $485 (which includes your CPJE application). Submit official PharmD transcripts, NAPLEX score reports, and documented intern hours. The full process from application submission to license issuance typically takes 12-16 weeks.
- Live Scan fingerprinting — California requires Live Scan electronic fingerprinting through a state-authorized vendor. Budget approximately $70-90. Results are submitted directly to the Department of Justice and the Board. This must be cleared before your license is issued.
- Receive license and apply for DEA registration and CURES — Once your California pharmacist license is active, register with the DEA (~$888 for 3 years) to dispense controlled substances. Also register with CURES (California Prescription Drug Monitoring Program) — mandatory for all California pharmacists who dispense Schedule II-IV medications and free to register.
Fees and Timeline
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| NABP e-Profile | $35 |
| NAPLEX | $695 |
| CPJE (included in Board application) | Included below |
| California Board application (includes CPJE) | ~$485 |
| Live Scan fingerprinting | ~$70-90 |
| Total estimated | ~$1,285-1,305 |
Timeline: Plan for 12-16 weeks from initial application to active license. The CPJE scheduling queue and Board processing times are the primary variables that can extend the timeline beyond 12 weeks.
NAPLEX Score Transfer
California does NOT allow NAPLEX score transfers. Every pharmacist applying for licensure in California must take the NAPLEX, regardless of current active licensure in other states. This is one of the most important distinctions about California licensure and catches many out-of-state pharmacists by surprise. Plan accordingly when considering a relocation to California.
DEA Registration
After receiving your California pharmacist license, register with the DEA (~$888 for 3 years) to dispense Schedule II-V controlled substances. California also requires mandatory CURES registration for pharmacists dispensing Schedules II-IV — register at the CURES 2.0 portal using your California license number. CURES access is required before filling controlled substance prescriptions in California.
Continuing Education (CE)
California requires 30 hours of CE per 2-year renewal cycle. Required topics include: pharmacy law (minimum 1 hour), patient safety (1 hour), and for pharmacists with furnishing authority, topics specific to the medications they are authorized to furnish. All CE must be from ACPE-accredited providers and is tracked through CPE Monitor. California pharmacists with additional practice privileges (e.g., hormonal contraceptives, naloxone, travel medications) have additional CE requirements for those protocols.
