How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Virginia: 2026 License Guide
How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Virginia
Virginia licenses Registered Dietitians through the Virginia Board of Medicine — Dietetics section, making it one of a smaller number of states that house dietitian regulation under a medical board rather than a standalone health professions board. With major health systems across Northern Virginia, Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Southwest Virginia — plus a substantial military and federal healthcare presence — Virginia offers a diverse and strong job market for qualified RDs and RDNs.
Step 1: ACEND-Accredited Nutrition Program
As of January 1, 2024, CDR requires all new RD candidates to hold a minimum of a master's degree from an ACEND-accredited program. Virginia residents have in-state options at James Madison University, Virginia Tech, and other accredited programs, as well as access to programs throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Your program must include a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) plus a supervised Dietetic Internship (DI) of at least 1,200 hours — or an integrated coordinated master's that fulfills both. Integrated master's pathways are increasingly the default entry route; confirm with programs which format best fits your timeline and specialty interests (clinical, community, foodservice management, sports nutrition, etc.).
Step 2: CDR Registration Examination
After completing your ACEND program and supervised hours, you apply to CDR for authorization to test:
- Exam fee: approximately $200 (confirm at eatrightpro.org)
- Format: 145 questions (125 scored) via Prometric computer-based testing centers; Virginia has Prometric sites in Northern Virginia, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Roanoke, and other metro areas
- Domains: Principles of Dietetics, Nutrition Care for Individuals and Groups, Management of Food and Nutrition Programs and Services, Population and Community Nutrition
- Maintenance: 75 PDUs per five-year cycle to maintain CDR registration
Step 3: Virginia State Dietitian License
Virginia requires a license to practice as a dietitian. The Virginia Board of Medicine — Dietetics section oversees licensure:
- Application fee: approximately $75–$130 (verify current fee on the Virginia Department of Health Professions website)
- Documents: CDR verification of registration, official transcripts, completed Board of Medicine application
- Renewal cycle: Virginia health professions licenses renew on a biennial schedule; CDR's 75-PDU requirement runs on a five-year cycle — maintain both independently
- Title protection: Virginia law restricts "Registered Dietitian" and "Licensed Dietitian" to licensees; "Dietitian Nutritionist" is also protected
Continuing Education
Virginia dietitians must complete 75 PDUs during each five-year CDR cycle to maintain CDR registration. Virginia Board of Medicine aligns its biennial renewal with CDR records. High-value CE resources for Virginia practitioners include:
- Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (VAND) annual symposium and webinars
- Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics national Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE)
- Medical nutrition therapy specialty certification CE (CNSC, CSO, CSR, CSSD, CSOWM)
- Military Dietetic Internship CE opportunities for those serving federal facilities
RD vs. RDN
"RD" and "RDN" are legally equivalent CDR credentials. Virginia Board of Medicine licensing uses "Registered Dietitian" as the statutory title; both the RD and RDN designations satisfy the Virginia licensure requirement. Clinically, the difference is brand preference: many hospital systems still use "RD" on job descriptions and credentials while newer graduates and community-focused practitioners often prefer "RDN" to signal the breadth of nutrition practice beyond clinical settings.
