How to Get Your Virginia PTA License in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide
How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Virginia
Virginia is one of the most robust physical therapy job markets in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Northern Virginia/DC metro corridor commands among the highest PTA wages in the country, while the rest of the state — from the Shenandoah Valley to Hampton Roads and Southwest Virginia — offers a wide variety of practice settings. Virginia is a PT Compact member and has an active military-connected healthcare ecosystem that drives consistent demand for outpatient rehabilitation services.
Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program
Virginia has multiple CAPTE-accredited PTA programs at community colleges statewide, including programs at Northern Virginia Community College, Wytheville Community College, and Germanna Community College, among others.
Program requirements:
- Two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from a CAPTE-accredited institution
- Minimum 16 weeks of supervised clinical education in approved clinical settings (acute care, outpatient, SNF, home health, etc.)
- Prerequisites typically include biology, anatomy, physiology, and psychology
Graduates must have official transcripts sent directly from their institution to the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy as part of the licensure application.
Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam
All Virginia PTA applicants must pass the NPTE-PTA administered by FSBPT.
- Exam fee: approximately $485 per attempt
- Format: 200 questions over 4 hours at a Prometric testing center
- Passing score: 600 or higher (200–800 scale)
- Attempt limit: 6 lifetime attempts maximum
- Scheduling: requires Authorization to Test (ATT) from Virginia Board of Physical Therapy before scheduling with Prometric
Virginia allows candidates to submit their licensure application before graduation but will not issue the ATT until the program confirms graduation and the Board receives official transcripts.
Step 3: Apply for Your Virginia PTA License
Virginia PTA licensure is regulated by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy under the Department of Health Professions (DHP).
- Licensing fee: approximately $75–$130 (verify current fees at dhp.virginia.gov)
- Background check: criminal history background check required via the DHP application portal
- Jurisprudence: Virginia requires applicants to demonstrate knowledge of the Virginia Physical Therapy Practice Act and regulations; review Title 54.1, Chapter 34.1 of the Code of Virginia and the Board's regulations (18 VAC 112)
- Application materials: official transcripts, FSBPT score verification, government ID, application fee, and any required attestations
- Processing time: typically 4–10 weeks
Virginia PTA licenses are renewed every two years. License verification is available through the DHP online lookup portal, which is commonly used by healthcare employers for credential verification.
PT Compact Membership
Virginia is a member of the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact (PT Compact). PTAs holding a compact-eligible license in their home state can obtain Virginia compact privileges without a full license application. This is particularly useful for:
- Travel PTAs taking assignments in the Northern Virginia/DC metro area
- PTAs working for multi-state healthcare systems with Virginia locations
- Military spouses and veterans relocating to Virginia's many military-adjacent communities (Hampton Roads, Northern VA, Quantico area)
Continuing Education Requirements
Virginia requires 30 continuing education hours per two-year renewal cycle:
- At least 2 of the 30 hours must be in topics related to ethics or Virginia laws and regulations governing physical therapy practice
- Acceptable formats: live seminars, online CE platforms (MedBridge, Therapeutic Associates, etc.), CEU workshops, and APTA conference sessions
- CPR/First Aid certification does not count toward CE hours
- Retain CE documentation for three years in case of audit
- Virginia does not restrict the number of online CE hours (unlike some states that cap self-study)
Virginia PTA Salary Ranges
Virginia PTA compensation varies significantly by geography, with Northern Virginia commanding a substantial premium:
- Statewide typical range: $50,000–$70,000 per year
- Northern Virginia / DC Metro: $58,000–$78,000 — the highest wages in the state, driven by cost of living and healthcare competition with DC and Maryland employers
- Hampton Roads / Richmond: $50,000–$65,000 — strong demand in military-connected outpatient settings
- Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF): $50,000–$67,000 statewide
- Home Health: $52,000–$70,000, with mileage-heavy rural positions offering higher effective pay
- Outpatient Orthopedics: $50,000–$65,000; Northern VA clinics near military installations pay more for experience with military populations
- Travel PTA: $35–$55/hr all-inclusive; Northern VA travel rates often reach the top of range due to cost of living adjustments
Virginia's military community creates consistent demand for outpatient physical therapy — particularly at or near Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Belvoir, Quantico, and Naval Station Norfolk. PTAs with orthopedic and sports rehab experience often have strong career mobility in these markets.
