South Dakota CRNAs are licensed as APRNs by the South Dakota Board of Nursing. South Dakota is a reduced practice state — a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician is required. South Dakota has NOT opted out of the federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement. Sioux Falls (Sanford, Avera) and Rapid City (Monument Health) anchor the major markets. South Dakota has no state income tax, providing a meaningful compensation advantage versus comparable rural Midwest markets. South Dakota has significant Indian Health Service (IHS) and tribal health presence on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Cheyenne River, and Standing Rock reservations.

Practice Model

  • Written collaborative practice agreement with physician required
  • South Dakota has NOT opted out of federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement
  • ACT model: Sanford USD Medical Center (Sioux Falls), Monument Health Rapid City Regional Hospital
  • CRNA-independent (with collaborative agreement): Avera Health community hospitals, rural CAH facilities, IHS/tribal facilities
  • South Dakota's large reservation communities (Pine Ridge, Rosebud) rely on CRNA-only anesthesia through IHS; Pine Ridge is the largest Indian reservation in the US

Application Requirements

  • Active South Dakota RN license (compact or SD-issued)
  • Current NBCRNA certification
  • Official nurse anesthesia program documentation
  • Completed doh.sd.gov/boards/nursing application + $75 fee
  • Criminal background check via SD DCI

Processing Timeline

South Dakota Board of Nursing processes APRN applications in 6–8 weeks from complete submission. SD is an efficient compact state; applications with complete documentation rarely encounter extended delays.
