How to Get a Speech-Language Pathologist License in Washington (2026)
Washington State sits at the top of the SLP compensation ladder in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle's concentration of world-class health systems — UW Medicine, Swedish Health Services, and Seattle Children's Hospital — combined with a high cost of living and strong union presence in healthcare has pushed SLP wages well above national medians. For compact-eligible practitioners, adding Washington to a multi-state portfolio can meaningfully increase annual earnings, especially on travel assignments.

SLP Compact vs. full endorsement
Washington is an ASLP-IC Compact member. SLPs with an active home-state compact license and current CCC-SLP can request a Washington practice privilege at aslpcompact.com with approvals arriving in one to three business days. This is the go-to path for travel SLPs heading to Seattle-area facilities or rural eastern Washington assignments.
Full endorsement applications go to the Washington Department of Health, which manages licensure through a well-developed online portal. At ~$150, Washington's fee is among the higher in this compact batch, but the portal is user-friendly and DOH is generally responsive. Required materials include ASHA CCC-SLP verification, official graduate transcripts, and a background check. Complete applications process in six to eight weeks. Washington does not require a state-specific jurisprudence exam for SLPs.

Where SLP demand is highest in Washington
Seattle metro is Washington's SLP epicenter. UW Medicine — which includes UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center — carries active SLP openings in acute care, voice, fluency, and augmentative communication. Swedish Health Services (now part of Providence) operates multiple Seattle campuses with robust inpatient and outpatient SLP programs. Seattle Children's Hospital is the state's premier pediatric SLP employer, with nationally recognized programs in autism, feeding disorders, and AAC. The collective density of these institutions makes the Seattle market extremely competitive for candidates.
Spokane is the dominant market in eastern Washington. Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and MultiCare Deaconess Hospital serve a large inland Northwest catchment area. Spokane is also a referral hub for rural Idaho and Montana patients, creating consistent acute-care SLP demand and making it a common travel contract destination.
Tacoma is served by MultiCare Tacoma General and St. Joseph Medical Center. School-based SLP demand in the Tacoma Unified and surrounding Pierce County districts is significant, and the area has historically relied on travel and contract SLPs to fill gaps.
Rural eastern Washington — including the Yakima Valley, the Tri-Cities (Kennewick/Richland/Pasco), and the Okanogan and Ferry County regions — has severe SLP shortages in both medical and school settings. Travel SLPs in these markets often receive above-average stipends to offset the remote locations.
Bottom line
Washington State offers the highest SLP hospital wages in this compact batch, with Seattle acute-care positions regularly clearing $100K base. The cost of living in Seattle is high, but travel assignments in Spokane and eastern Washington offer strong packages with lower living costs. Use the compact route to get in fast — the DOH portal is efficient, but the compact is measurably faster when time matters.
