How to Get a Speech-Language Pathologist License in New York (2026)

New York is not a member of the ASLP-IC Compact, which means every SLP who wishes to practice in New York — regardless of their home state — must complete the full endorsement process. Licensure is administered by the NY State Education Department (NYS SED), Office of the Professions, rather than a traditional health licensing board, and the process includes a review of graduate transcripts. Allow eight to twelve weeks for a complete application to be processed. New York's enormous healthcare market includes NYC Health + Hospitals, NYU Langone Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, Montefiore Health System, and Cohen Children's Medical Center.

New York SLP license at a glance

  • Issuing authority: NY State Education Department (NYS SED), Office of the Professions
  • SLP Compact member: No
  • Endorsement processing: 8–12 weeks
  • Application fee: ~$210
  • ASHA CCC-SLP required: Yes

Full endorsement process

Because New York sits outside the ASLP-IC Compact, there is no shortcut for experienced SLPs — everyone applies through the same NYS SED portal at op.nysed.gov. The process requires:

  • Official graduate transcripts sent directly from your institution to NYS SED. Your M.S. or doctoral program must be in communication sciences and disorders (or a closely related field). SED reviews coursework to confirm compliance with New York's education requirements, so incomplete or unofficial transcripts are a common cause of delays.
  • ASHA CCC-SLP verification submitted directly from ASHA to SED.
  • Clinical Fellowship documentation — proof of completed nine-month CF year is required.
  • Criminal background check via fingerprinting through IdentoGO (NYSID program).

The $210 fee is non-refundable. New York licenses are issued for a two-year cycle and require 30 hours of continuing education for renewal, including mandatory training in child abuse identification and reporting (three hours) and infection control (two hours). Because New York is not in the compact, SLPs who hold a New York primary license cannot use it to obtain compact privileges in other states — you'll need individual licenses in each non-compact state and compact privileges activated from a compact home state.

Where SLP demand is highest in New York

New York City is the largest single SLP market in the United States. All five boroughs generate substantial demand across hospitals, pediatric specialty centers, outpatient clinics, and one of the country's largest public school systems (NYC DOE). NYC Health + Hospitals employs SLPs across 11 acute-care facilities, while NYU Langone and NewYork-Presbyterian compete aggressively for skilled dysphagia and neurogenic communication specialists. Montefiore Health System in the Bronx and Cohen Children's on Long Island anchor pediatric demand. Outside the city, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse each have competitive regional healthcare markets with strong acute-care and school-based SLP demand. Rural upstate New York has significant shortages, particularly in the North Country, Southern Tier, and Mohawk Valley regions.

Bottom line

New York's non-compact status and $210 fee mean the licensing process is slower and more expensive than in most other states, but the compensation premium — particularly in NYC — makes it worthwhile for most SLPs. Start the NYS SED application at least 10–12 weeks before your intended start date, ensure transcripts are sent directly from your institution, and track your application status through the SED portal.
