Ohio is the home of the Cleveland Clinic, OSU Wexner Medical Center, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital — three of the highest-volume academic systems in the Midwest. The Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) is reasonably efficient, and Ohio is an NLC member which simplifies licensure for compact-eligible candidates.

This guide covers the OBN endorsement process and the academic credentialing landscape at Cleveland Clinic, OSU, Cincinnati Children's, and University Hospitals (UH Cleveland).

Step 0: Check NLC compact privilege

If you hold a multi-state compact license from another NLC state AND Ohio is not your primary state of residence, you have NLC privilege to practice in OH without endorsement.

Standard OBN endorsement

  1. Apply at the OBN eLicense portal
  2. $75 endorsement fee (one of the lowest in the country)
  3. Complete WebCheck (state) + FBI fingerprint background check
  4. Submit Nursys verification from every prior state
  5. Have nursing school send official transcripts directly
  6. Wait for OBN review (6-10 weeks)

Cleveland Clinic + OSU + Cincinnati Children's credentialing

  • Cleveland Clinic: Internal nursing credentialing 75-105 days; specialty competency assessment for ICU, OR, Cath Lab
  • OSU Wexner Medical Center (Columbus): 60-90 days
  • Cincinnati Children's Hospital: 75-105 days for pediatric subspecialty
  • University Hospitals (UH Cleveland): 60-90 days
  • Bon Secours Mercy / Trinity Health Ohio: 45-60 days community credentialing

Renewal

  • Biennial renewal (every 2 years on Oct 31, even or odd year)
  • Renewal fee: $65
  • 24 contact hours of CE per renewal cycle
  • Mandatory: 1 hour Ohio Nurse Practice Act each renewal

What we see at Ava Health

Ohio RN demand is concentrated in Cleveland metro (Cleveland Clinic + UH), Columbus (OSU + Mount Carmel + OhioHealth), and Cincinnati (Cincinnati Children's + UC Health). Specialty demand is highest for ICU, ER, Cath Lab, and Pediatric subspecialties. Compensation is generally at national median, with metro areas commanding standard premiums.

For RNs considering Ohio: NLC compact privilege simplifies travel nursing. Cleveland Clinic specifically has a strong nursing recruiting infrastructure that supports out-of-state moves and provides relocation packages. Cincinnati Children's similarly offers strong pediatric specialty onboarding.
