Ohio nurse practitioners practice under a reduced practice authority model — a Standard Care Arrangement (SCA) with a physician is required for prescribing authority. Average NP salary in Ohio is $108,000/year in 2026, with Cleveland and Columbus academic systems offering up to $125,000 for specialty NPs.

Ohio NP Practice Authority

Ohio is a reduced practice authority state. NPs may diagnose and treat independently, but prescriptive authority (including controlled substances) requires a Standard Care Arrangement (SCA) with a supervising physician. The SCA must be maintained and updated every 2 years. Ohio legislators have considered but not passed full practice authority legislation.

CANS Application Requirements

  • Active Ohio RN license
  • Graduation from accredited NP program (master's or doctorate minimum)
  • National certification from ANCC, AANP, NCC, or other Ohio Board-recognized body
  • CANS application fee: $75
  • Transcripts sent directly from institution to Ohio Board of Nursing

Processing Timeline

Ohio CANS applications typically process in 6–10 weeks. Online status tracking available through the Ohio Board of Nursing portal.

What We See at Ava Health

Ohio FNP and AGPCNP candidates are consistently in demand for primary care, urgent care, and hospital medicine positions. The SCA requirement is manageable — most large health systems have established SCA infrastructure. Rural southeastern Ohio has significant NHSC-eligible shortages.
