How to Get Your PTA License in New York (2026 Guide)
How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in New York
New York State offers some of the highest PTA salaries in the nation, anchored by the massive New York City healthcare market. However, New York is one of the few populous states that has not joined the Physical Therapy Compact, and its CE renewal cycle is three years rather than the standard two — both factors to account for in your planning.
Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program
New York requires graduation from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program that is also registered with the New York State Education Department. New York has numerous CAPTE-accredited PTA programs at community colleges and vocational institutions throughout the state, including multiple programs in New York City. Verify both CAPTE accreditation and NYSED registration at capteonline.org and the NYSED website before enrolling.
Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam
New York requires passage of the FSBPT's NPTE-PTA examination:
- Fee: approximately $485 per attempt
- Format: 200 questions over 4 hours
- Passing score: 600 or higher (scaled score)
- Attempt limit: maximum 6 lifetime attempts
Register at fsbpt.org. NYSED receives score reports from FSBPT electronically.
Step 3: Apply for Your New York PTA License
New York licenses are issued by the New York State Board for Physical Therapy, administered through the NYSED Office of Professions — not a standalone physical therapy board. The application process:
- Apply through the NYSED eAccess portal at op.nysed.gov
- Official transcripts from your CAPTE/NYSED-registered program
- NPTE-PTA passing score verification
- Licensure fee of approximately $70–$117 (NYSED fees vary by application type and registration period)
- Background check
NYSED processing can take several weeks to months. New York does not issue temporary practice permits for new graduates. Plan your job start date around the expected processing window and check NYSED's current wait time estimates.
PT Compact Membership
New York is NOT a member of the Physical Therapy Compact. This is one of the most important facts for NY-licensed PTAs to understand. If you wish to practice in other states, you must apply for individual state licenses — compact privileges are not available with a New York home-state license. Conversely, PTAs licensed in compact member states cannot use compact privileges to practice in New York; they must obtain a full New York license. Monitor ptcompact.org for updates, as NY compact status may change in future legislative sessions.
Continuing Education Requirements
New York uses a three-year renewal cycle — different from the two-year cycle common in most states. PTAs must complete 36 contact hours of continuing education per three-year cycle. This works out to 12 hours per year. New York has specific CE category requirements; always review the NYSED guidelines at renewal time, as requirements are updated periodically. Keep all CE certificates on file, as NYSED conducts CE audits at renewal.
New York PTA Salary Ranges
New York — especially New York City — offers the highest PTA wages of any state in the country:
- Entry-level (0–2 years): $58,000–$65,000/year
- Mid-career (3–7 years): $65,000–$73,000/year
- Experienced (8+ years): $73,000–$78,000/year
- NYC five boroughs premium: $5,000–$10,000+ above upstate NY rates
- Travel PTA contracts in NYC metro: $1,700–$2,300/week
- Long Island and Westchester: salaries typically close to NYC rates
Upstate New York (Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) offers lower wages but substantially lower cost of living.
