How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the highest-paying states for Physical Therapist Assistants in the country, driven by NYC metro wages, dense population, and a massive healthcare infrastructure. From academic medical centers in Newark and New Brunswick to outpatient clinics in the Shore communities, NJ offers diverse PTA career opportunities.

Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program

New Jersey requires graduation from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program. These two-year associate degree programs cover anatomy, kinesiology, therapeutic modalities, and supervised clinical rotations. New Jersey has multiple CAPTE-accredited PTA programs at community colleges throughout the state. Confirm current accreditation status at capteonline.org.

Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam

New Jersey requires passage of the FSBPT's NPTE-PTA exam before licensure will be issued:

  • Fee: approximately $485 per attempt
  • Format: 200 questions over 4 hours
  • Passing score: 600 or higher (scaled score)
  • Attempt limit: maximum 6 lifetime attempts

Register at fsbpt.org. The NJ Board receives score reports electronically from FSBPT.

Step 3: Apply for Your New Jersey PTA License

Applications are submitted to the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy through the state's Division of Consumer Affairs. The packet includes:

  • Completed application form
  • Official transcripts from your CAPTE-accredited program
  • NPTE-PTA passing score verification
  • Licensure fee of approximately $75–$100
  • Background check

New Jersey does not issue temporary licenses. Processing times at the NJ Board can be several weeks; plan your start date accordingly. Always check the Board's official website for the most current fee schedule and instructions.

PT Compact Membership

New Jersey is a member of the Physical Therapy Compact. For NJ-based PTAs, compact privileges are particularly useful for taking travel assignments or working across the border in Pennsylvania, Delaware, or other member states. Visit ptcompact.org to check the current member state list and apply for compact privileges.

Continuing Education Requirements

New Jersey requires 30 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle. CE must be relevant to the practice of physical therapy. NJ does not currently mandate specific topic areas for PTAs, but clinical skills, ethics, and evidence-based practice courses are popular choices. Retain documentation — the Board audits CE compliance at renewal. With 30 hours required, planning your CE throughout the renewal period (rather than the final weeks) prevents last-minute stress.

New Jersey PTA Salary Ranges

New Jersey offers some of the highest PTA wages in the country, particularly in the NYC metro corridor:

  • Entry-level (0–2 years): $55,000–$62,000/year
  • Mid-career (3–7 years): $62,000–$69,000/year
  • Experienced (8+ years): $69,000–$75,000/year
  • NYC metro premium (Bergen, Hudson, Essex counties): adds $5,000–$8,000 above statewide median
  • Travel PTA rates: $1,600–$2,100/week in NJ/NYC metro
  • SNF and home health: competitive with strong per-visit and PRN options

  • Hackensack Meridian Health — major north NJ system with extensive outpatient and inpatient rehab
