New Jersey PA License 2026: Physician Assistant Requirements, Supervision, and Salary
New Jersey physician assistants are licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners (part of the Division of Consumer Affairs). The state requires a filed supervision agreement with a licensed New Jersey physician before PA practice may begin. New Jersey is one of the most densely populated states in the country, and its position between New York City and Philadelphia creates one of the most active PA job markets in the nation. NYC-proximity salaries drive above-average NJ PA compensation despite the high cost of living.
Practice Model: Supervision Required
New Jersey PAs must have a Board-filed written supervision agreement with a licensed New Jersey physician. The agreement defines scope of practice and prescriptive authority. The supervising physician is legally responsible for the PA's clinical decisions within the scope of the agreement.
- Supervision agreement: Required and filed with the State Board of Medical Examiners
- Prescriptive authority: Schedule II–V with DEA registration under the supervision agreement
- Multiple systems: PAs often hold both NJ and NY licenses for cross-state practice in the NYC metro
Application Requirements
- Active NCCPA certification
- Graduation from ARC-PA accredited program
- NJ Division of Consumer Affairs application and ~$200 fee
- Filed supervision agreement
- Background check
- DEA registration (separate)
Processing Timeline
The New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners processes complete PA applications in 8–10 weeks. High application volume in this dense market extends processing. Supervision agreement review adds 1–2 weeks. Total time to practice-ready: approximately 10–12 weeks.

What We See at Ava Health
New Jersey's 10–12 week licensure timeline and mandatory supervision agreement process are the primary friction points for PA candidates. Large systems like RWJBarnabas and Hackensack Meridian have standardized supervision agreements ready to execute, which minimizes delays. The NYC-proximity premium is real: northern NJ PA salaries approach NYC levels at meaningfully lower COL than Manhattan. South Jersey positions (Cooper, Jefferson) draw from the Philadelphia PA talent pool — candidates often hold both NJ and PA licenses.
