How to Become a Registered Dental Hygienist in New Hampshire

New Hampshire occupies a strategically advantageous position in the New England dental market. Its southern tier — particularly Portsmouth, Nashua, and Manchester — sits within the Boston metropolitan labor market, meaning that hygienists practicing near the Massachusetts border benefit from New England's strong demand without paying Massachusetts income tax. Here is a complete guide to earning your New Hampshire RDH license.

Step 1: Complete an Accredited Dental Hygiene Program

New Hampshire requires graduation from a CODA-accredited dental hygiene program. In-state options include the dental hygiene program at New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI – Concord's Community College), which offers an associate-level CODA-accredited program. Many New Hampshire candidates attend programs in neighboring Massachusetts or Maine, both of which have multiple CODA-accredited schools.

The Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene (ADDH, two years) satisfies the NH Board's minimum requirement. A BSDH is preferred for public health, academic, and larger health-system positions and is obtainable through online completion programs.

Step 2: Pass the NBDHE

Applicants must pass the 350-question National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) through the JCNDE. The examination fee is approximately $450. The NBDHE covers biomedical and dental hygiene sciences as well as case-based clinical reasoning. A passing score is required before the NH Board will issue your license.

Step 3: Pass a Clinical Examination

New Hampshire accepts the ADEX (CDCA Dental Hygiene Examination) for clinical competency verification. ADEX test sites are available throughout New England, including sites in Massachusetts, making it accessible for most New Hampshire candidates. The exam evaluates live-patient periodontal instrumentation, radiographic skills, and overall clinical dental hygiene competency. Confirm current test dates and site availability on the CDCA website.

Step 4: Apply for Your State License

Submit your application to the New Hampshire Board of Dental Examiners. Required materials include:

  • Completed application and fee (~$100–$150 for initial licensure)
  • Official CODA-accredited program transcripts
  • NBDHE passing score
  • ADEX passing score
  • Background check

New Hampshire RDH licenses are renewed every two years. The Board also processes endorsement applications for hygienists licensed in other states who meet NH requirements.

Continuing Education Requirements

New Hampshire requires 20 CE hours per two-year renewal cycle. Acceptable CE may be earned through ADA CERP-recognized courses, the New Hampshire Dental Society's affiliated programs, CODA-accredited dental school CE events, and approved online platforms. CPR/BLS is typically required by employers and may count toward CE depending on provider approval. There are no specific mandatory topic requirements beyond the 20-hour total at the state level.

New Hampshire Dental Hygienist Salary Ranges

New Hampshire salaries are elevated by New England market dynamics and the influence of the Boston metro on the state's southern corridor.

  • Entry-level (0–2 years): $60,000–$72,000/year
  • Mid-career (3–7 years): $72,000–$86,000/year
  • Experienced (8+ years): $86,000–$100,000/year

Portsmouth and Nashua — which draw from Boston's overflow dental demand — tend to offer the highest wages. Concord, Manchester, and the Lakes Region are close behind. Northern New Hampshire runs 10–15% below southern NH rates.
