How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Nevada 2026: RD/RDN License Guide
How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Nevada
Nevada dietitians must hold both CDR national registration and a state license issued through the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners — Dietetics section. Nevada's unique market profile sets it apart from most states: Las Vegas's massive hospitality and resort industry creates steady demand for dietitians in celebrity nutrition, sports performance nutrition, and high-volume food-service management — roles that pay above standard clinical benchmarks. Alongside the hospitality market, Nevada's growing health systems and dialysis network drive consistent clinical RD demand.
The CDR master's-degree requirement, effective January 1, 2024, applies in Nevada as in all states.
Step 1: ACEND-Accredited Nutrition Program
Complete a master's degree or higher from an ACEND-accredited dietetics or nutrition program. The curriculum must include a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) covering the full scope of nutrition sciences, clinical practice, and food-service management. After the DPD, complete a Dietetic Internship (DI) or coordinated program with a minimum of 1,200 supervised practice hours. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) offers an ACEND-accredited program for Nevada-based candidates; many Nevada dietitians complete programs in neighboring California, Arizona, or Utah.
Step 2: CDR Registration Examination
Upon CDR authorization to test:
- Exam fee: approximately $200
- Format: 145 questions (125 scored + 20 unscored), computer-adaptive
- Delivery: Pearson VUE in-person or remote proctoring
- Renewal: 75 PDUs per 5-year cycle
Step 3: Nevada State Dietitian License
Apply to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners — Dietetics after passing the CDR exam. The application fee is approximately $75–$100. Submit CDR pass confirmation, official ACEND transcripts, and supervised practice documentation. Nevada issues biennial licenses; renewal aligns with CDR's 5-year PDU cycle. Operating as a dietitian in Nevada without a state license is unlawful regardless of CDR status.
Continuing Education
CDR requires 75 PDUs every 5 years. Nevada's state CE requirements align with CDR's cycle. Given the state's unique hospitality market, continuing education in sports nutrition, weight management, eating behavior, and high-performance nutrition can be professionally valuable beyond strict CE compliance. CDR-approved specialty certifications in sports dietetics (CSSD) or renal nutrition (CSR) are popular PDU pathways for Nevada practitioners.
RD vs. RDN
Both titles — Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) — represent the same CDR credential since 2013. Nevada's state license uses the "licensed dietitian" or "dietitian" title. The RD/RDN suffix is a CDR designation you add to your professional title. In Las Vegas's consumer-facing food and wellness market, many practitioners prefer RDN to distinguish their credentials from the looser "nutritionist" label used by non-credentialed practitioners.
Nevada RD Salary Ranges
Nevada salaries, particularly in Las Vegas, reflect both strong demand and the state's above-average cost of living in metro areas. 2026 estimates:
- Entry-level clinical RD: $52,000–$66,000/year
- Experienced clinical RD: $65,000–$80,000/year
- Renal/dialysis RD: $65,000–$85,000/year
- Travel RD (contract): $35–$50/hour plus housing stipend
- Hospitality/resort nutrition specialist: $60,000–$90,000/year (variable; depends heavily on property and role scope)
- Sports/celebrity nutrition (Las Vegas): highly variable; upper-end private clients can command $100/hr+
