How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Nevada

Nevada's rapid population growth, aging retirement communities, and bustling Las Vegas healthcare corridor make it a dynamic market for Physical Therapist Assistants. Skilled nursing facilities, outpatient orthopedics, and sports rehab clinics all actively recruit PTAs throughout the state.

Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program

Nevada applicants must hold a degree from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program. These two-year associate degree programs combine anatomy, kinesiology, therapeutic exercise, and clinical rotations. Nevada has CAPTE-accredited PTA programs at institutions in the Las Vegas metro area. Confirm program accreditation at capteonline.org.

Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam

Nevada requires passage of the FSBPT's NPTE-PTA examination:

  • Fee: approximately $485 per attempt
  • Format: 200 questions over 4 hours
  • Passing score: 600 or higher (scaled score)
  • Attempt limit: maximum 6 lifetime attempts

Schedule your exam at fsbpt.org. Results are transmitted to the Nevada Board electronically after passing.

Step 3: Apply for Your Nevada PTA License

Submit your application to the Nevada Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. The application packet includes:

  • Completed application form (available on the Board's website)
  • Official transcripts from your CAPTE-accredited program
  • NPTE-PTA passing score verification
  • Licensure fee of approximately $75–$100
  • Background check authorization

Nevada does not issue temporary permits, so new graduates should plan their job start dates around the expected Board processing timeline. Check the Board's website for current processing estimates and any supplemental requirements.

PT Compact Membership

Nevada is a member of the Physical Therapy Compact. Nevada-licensed PTAs can obtain compact privileges to work in other member states — particularly useful for travel PTA assignments in the Western U.S. and Sun Belt markets. Visit ptcompact.org for the current list of member states and application process.

Continuing Education Requirements

Nevada requires 30 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle. CE courses must be relevant to physical therapy practice. Nevada does not currently mandate specific topic areas for PTAs, but courses covering evidence-based practice, pain management, and geriatric care are widely applicable given the state's patient demographics. Keep completion certificates on file; the Board may audit CE compliance at renewal.

Nevada PTA Salary Ranges

Nevada PTA salaries are driven upward by Las Vegas demand and the state's competitive healthcare labor market:

  • Entry-level (0–2 years): $48,000–$55,000/year
  • Mid-career (3–7 years): $55,000–$64,000/year
  • Experienced (8+ years): $64,000–$70,000/year
  • Las Vegas metro premium: typically $3,000–$5,000 above statewide median
  • Travel PTA contracts: $1,400–$1,900/week
  • SNF premium: high-volume Las Vegas SNFs often pay shift differentials and sign-on bonuses

Top Employers

Nevada's PTA job market is heavily concentrated in Las Vegas, with secondary opportunities in Reno/Sparks and rural Nevada:

  • Valley Health System — large Las Vegas hospital network with inpatient and outpatient rehab
  • Renown Health — northern Nevada's dominant health system, headquartered in Reno
  • ATI Physical Therapy — strong outpatient clinic presence across the Las Vegas metro
  • Select Medical / Select Rehabilitation — SNF contract rehab throughout the Las Vegas valley and statewide
  • Kindred Healthcare — LTACH and SNF operations in Las Vegas
  • Dignity Health (CommonSpirit) — hospital and clinic network with rehab services in Las Vegas and Henderson

The Las Vegas SNF and outpatient market is one of the most active in the Southwest, with multiple national rehab chains competing for qualified PTAs. New graduates who land in Las Vegas typically report short job search timelines.
