How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Nebraska 2026: RD/RDN License Guide
How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Nebraska
Nebraska dietitians must hold CDR national registration and a state credential issued through Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) — Dietetics Registration. The dual requirement ensures that every practicing dietitian in Nebraska has passed both the national CDR examination and state-level scrutiny. Nebraska's growing health system presence in Omaha and Lincoln, combined with strong rural WIC and public health nutrition demand, creates consistent openings for newly credentialed RDs.
The CDR master's-degree requirement, effective January 1, 2024, applies to all new candidates entering the profession.
Step 1: ACEND-Accredited Nutrition Program
Complete an ACEND-accredited graduate degree program in dietetics or nutrition. As of January 1, 2024, a master's degree is the minimum for CDR eligibility. Your program must include a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and a supervised Dietetic Internship (DI) or coordinated program totaling at least 1,200 supervised practice hours in clinical, community, and food-service settings. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and University of Nebraska Medical Center offer ACEND-accredited pathways.
Step 2: CDR Registration Examination
After CDR verifies your supervised hours:
- Exam fee: approximately $200
- Format: 145 questions (125 scored + 20 unscored), computer-adaptive
- Delivery: Pearson VUE in-person or remote proctoring
- Renewal: 75 PDUs per 5-year cycle
Step 3: Nebraska DHHS Dietetics Registration
Apply to Nebraska DHHS — Dietetics Registration after passing the CDR exam. The application fee is approximately $50–$75. Submit your CDR pass confirmation, ACEND transcripts, and supervised practice documentation. Nebraska requires biennial renewal aligned with CDR's renewal schedule. Operating as a dietitian in Nebraska without DHHS registration is a violation of state law regardless of CDR status.
Continuing Education
CDR requires 75 PDUs every 5 years. Nebraska's state CE requirements are aligned with CDR's cycle. Accredited activities from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, CDR-approved webinars, and graduate coursework all qualify. Nebraska dietitians in rural settings frequently earn PDUs through telehealth nutrition delivery courses and chronic disease management programs relevant to the state's agricultural and aging-population profile.
RD vs. RDN
Both RD (Registered Dietitian) and RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) represent the same CDR credential. Nebraska's DHHS registration will list you as a "registered dietitian." The RD/RDN suffix is a CDR designation added on top of your state registration. Either is appropriate on professional materials; many Nebraska practitioners use RDN to underscore their qualifications in a state where the term "nutritionist" is not regulated.
Nebraska RD Salary Ranges
Nebraska salaries are competitive relative to cost of living. Omaha's growing health system market has elevated clinical compensation in recent years. 2026 estimates:
- Entry-level clinical RD: $50,000–$63,000/year
- Experienced clinical RD: $62,000–$76,000/year
- Renal/dialysis RD: $63,000–$82,000/year
- Travel RD (contract): $35–$49/hour plus housing stipend
- Omaha metro premium: approximately 8–12% above statewide average
