How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Nebraska

Nebraska has a stable healthcare market with strong employment for Physical Therapist Assistants in Omaha, Lincoln, and throughout the state's rural communities. The licensing process is straightforward and one of the more affordable in the country.

Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program

Nebraska requires graduation from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program. These two-year associate degrees combine didactic coursework in anatomy, physiology, and rehabilitation sciences with supervised clinical placements. Nebraska has CAPTE-accredited programs at community colleges in the Omaha area and other locations. Confirm accreditation at capteonline.org before applying.

Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam

Nebraska requires successful passage of the NPTE-PTA administered by the FSBPT:

  • Fee: approximately $485 per attempt
  • Format: 200 questions over 4 hours
  • Passing score: 600 or higher (scaled score)
  • Attempt limit: maximum 6 lifetime attempts

Schedule your exam at fsbpt.org. Passing scores are transmitted directly to the Nebraska Board.

Step 3: Apply for Your Nebraska PTA License

Submit your application to the Nebraska Board of Physical Therapy. Required documentation:

  • Completed application form
  • Official transcripts from your CAPTE program
  • NPTE-PTA passing score verification
  • Licensure fee of approximately $50–$75
  • Background check

Nebraska's Board has a reputation for efficient processing. Review the Board's current website for any updates to fees or documentation requirements before submitting.

PT Compact Membership

Nebraska is a member of the Physical Therapy Compact. Licensed Nebraska PTAs can obtain compact privileges enabling practice in other member states — useful for those working near the Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, or South Dakota borders, or pursuing travel PTA assignments nationally. Details at ptcompact.org.

Continuing Education Requirements

Nebraska requires 20 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle. CE coursework must be relevant to the practice of physical therapy. Nebraska does not mandate specific subject areas at this time. Maintain documentation of all completed courses — the Board may audit CE records during renewal. Spreading CE hours across the two-year period (rather than cramming at the last minute) is strongly recommended.

Nebraska PTA Salary Ranges

Nebraska PTA salaries are competitive with the region, with the Omaha metro offering the highest wages:

  • Entry-level (0–2 years): $48,000–$54,000/year
  • Mid-career (3–7 years): $54,000–$62,000/year
  • Experienced (8+ years): $62,000–$70,000/year
  • Omaha metro premium: approximately $2,000–$4,000 above statewide median
  • Travel PTA rates: $1,300–$1,750/week

Top Employers

Nebraska's major health systems are concentrated in the Omaha–Lincoln corridor, with regional and rural employers filling out the statewide picture:

  • Nebraska Medicine — the University of Nebraska's academic medical center in Omaha, with inpatient and outpatient rehab services
  • CHI Health — large faith-based network with hospitals and clinics throughout eastern Nebraska
  • Select Medical / Select Rehabilitation — SNF and LTACH contract rehab across the state
  • Bryan Health — Lincoln-based system with comprehensive rehab programs
  • Methodist Health System — Omaha-based with multiple rehab locations
  • Rural Health Clinics and Critical Access Hospitals — western Nebraska CAHs actively recruit PTAs, often with housing and loan repayment incentives
