How to Become a Registered Dietitian in Minnesota

Minnesota dietitians must hold both the national CDR credential and a state license issued by the Minnesota Board of Dietetics and Nutrition Practice. The two-credential system reflects Minnesota's commitment to evidence-based nutrition care: every licensed dietitian in the state has cleared the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) examination and complied with ongoing continuing education requirements at both the federal and state level.

The pathway has become more academically rigorous since January 1, 2024, when CDR raised the minimum education requirement to a graduate degree. If you are just starting your nutrition education, plan for a master's-level program from the outset.

Step 1: ACEND-Accredited Nutrition Program

All candidates must graduate from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Since January 1, 2024, the minimum degree is a master's degree in dietetics, nutrition, or a related field. The graduate program must include the required Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) coursework covering food science, biochemistry, medical nutrition therapy, and management.

After completing the DPD, candidates complete a supervised practice component — either a Dietetic Internship (DI) or a coordinated program — totaling at least 1,200 supervised practice hours across clinical, community, and food-service rotations. Minnesota has multiple ACEND-accredited programs including those at the University of Minnesota and Saint Catherine University.

Step 2: CDR Registration Examination

After verifying your supervised practice hours, CDR authorizes you to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitian Nutritionists. Key facts for 2026:

  • Exam fee: approximately $200
  • Format: 145 questions (125 scored + 20 unscored), computer-adaptive
  • Delivery: Pearson VUE testing centers and remote proctoring
  • Maintenance: 75 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every 5-year renewal cycle

Passing the CDR exam earns you the Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential — your choice of title (more on that below).

Step 3: Minnesota State Dietitian License

Minnesota requires a separate state license in addition to CDR registration. Apply to the Minnesota Board of Dietetics and Nutrition Practice after passing the CDR exam. The application fee is approximately $100–$130. You must submit proof of CDR registration, your official ACEND transcripts, and supervised practice verification. Licenses are renewed biennially and are tied to CDR's continuing education cycle.

Practicing dietetics in Minnesota without a state license — even with a valid CDR credential — is a violation of state law. Always renew both your CDR registration and your state license on schedule.

Continuing Education

CDR requires 75 PDUs per 5-year renewal cycle to maintain RD or RDN status. PDUs can be earned through accredited webinars, conferences, self-study modules, graduate coursework, research, and preceptoring. Minnesota aligns its state CE requirements with CDR's cycle, so managing one PDU log generally satisfies both requirements. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and CDR's online portal both offer qualifying activities.

RD vs. RDN

Since 2013, CDR has allowed credential holders to use either Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) interchangeably — both refer to the identical credential and carry the same legal standing. Some Minnesota practitioners prefer RDN to distinguish themselves from unlicensed nutritionists. Your Minnesota state license will typically reference "licensed dietitian" (LD); the RD/RDN suffix is a CDR designation, not a state title.

Minnesota RD Salary Ranges

Minnesota dietitians benefit from a robust hospital market anchored by nationally recognized health systems. Salary data for 2026:

  • Entry-level clinical RD: $52,000–$65,000/year
  • Experienced clinical RD: $65,000–$78,000/year
  • Renal/dialysis RD: $65,000–$85,000/year
  • Travel RD (contract): $35–$50/hour plus housing stipend
  • Twin Cities metro premium: generally 8–15% above statewide averages

Minnesota's Twin Cities food and wellness innovation market creates additional demand for corporate dietitians, sports nutrition specialists, and private-practice practitioners, which can push compensation above standard clinical benchmarks.
