Minnesota hosts two globally-recognized health systems — Mayo Clinic (Rochester) and M Health Fairview / University of Minnesota — plus Allina Health and HealthPartners operating across the Twin Cities metro. Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP) is an IMLC member.

IMLC vs Standard MN BMP

Standard MN BMP8–12 weeks$595

  2. $595 application fee

Major health system credentialing (MN)

  • Mayo Clinic (Rochester / MSP): 120–150+ days. The most thorough academic credentialing process in the upper Midwest. Mayo's Department of Medicine peer review is extensive. Rochester campus and Saint Marys hospital operate as a unified credentialing entity.
  • M Health Fairview / University of Minnesota: 120–150 days academic credentialing. Strong demand in transplant, cancer (Masonic Cancer Center), and pediatrics (Masonic Children's Hospital).
  • Allina Health (MSP): 90–120 days regional/community system. Largest Twin Cities community system; primary care, hospitalist, EM demand.
  • HealthPartners (MSP + Regions Hospital): 90–120 days. Regions Hospital Level I trauma generates strong EM demand.
  • Essentia Health (Duluth / Northern MN): 75–105 days. Rural MN and Wisconsin market; geographic premiums for primary care.
  • CentraCare (St. Cloud): 75–90 days regional system.

Minnesota-specific requirements

  • MNPMP (PDMP): Registration required for controlled substance prescribers
  • CME: No state-mandated CME hours (hospital privileges and DEA require it)

Renewal

  • Annual renewal ($272/year) or 2-year
  • No state CME requirement (uncommon among larger states)

What we see at Ava Health

Mayo Clinic is the most demanding credentialing environment in the state and one of the most rigorous in the US. Recruiter tip: Mayo's Medical Staff Services office is your main contact — they run a highly structured process. Lead time 150+ days is realistic for subspecialty hires. Twin Cities community systems are more workable on standard 90-day timelines. Northern MN rural markets pay significant premiums for primary care and psychiatry, with IHS facilities in the northwest generating federal recruitment demand.
