Massachusetts is not an NLC member state. RN licensure goes through the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN), which has a moderate 8–12 week endorsement timeline in 2026.

This guide covers the BORN endorsement process and the Boston-area academic credentialing layer that overlays state licensure for major hospital systems.

BORN endorsement step-by-step

  1. Create account at the Mass.gov Board of Registration in Nursing portal
  2. Submit application + $230 fee
  3. Schedule fingerprinting via IdentoGO ($55 in-state Live Scan)
  4. Submit Nursys verification from every prior state ($30 per state)
  5. Have nursing school send official transcripts directly to BORN
  6. Wait for BORN review

Required documents

  • Application + fee submitted by you
  • Nursys verification from every state where you have ever held an RN license
  • Official nursing school transcripts (sent directly)
  • FBI fingerprint background check (Live Scan or ink card)
  • Continuing competency documentation if not actively practicing in last 3 years

Boston academic credentialing layer

  • Mass General Brigham (MGH + Brigham & Women's): Internal nursing credentialing 60–90 days; nursing competency assessment standard
  • Boston Children's Hospital: 75–105 days for pediatric specialty credentialing
  • Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center: 60–90 days
  • Tufts Medical Center: 45–75 days
  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: 60–90 days, oncology subspecialty

Renewal

  • Biennial renewal (every 2 years on birth month)
  • Renewal fee: $120
  • 15 contact hours of CE per renewal cycle (one of the lowest in the country)
  • Mandatory: 2 hours opioid education, 1 hour cultural competency

What we see at Ava Health

Massachusetts is moderately slow in our placement data — average 10.4 weeks from offer signed to first day of work. The non-NLC status is the primary delay. Boston-area academic systems often run credentialing in parallel with BORN review, so total time isn't significantly worse than NLC states.

For RNs considering MA: salary is at or above national median, particularly in Boston metro where ICU, ER, and L&D positions consistently command premium rates. Cape Cod and Western Mass community hospitals offer faster credentialing timelines (8-10 weeks total) and reasonable lifestyle benefits.
