Louisiana CRNAs are licensed as APRNs by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Louisiana is a reduced practice state — a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician is required. Louisiana has NOT opted out of the federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement. New Orleans is the dominant healthcare market (LCMC Health, Ochsner, Tulane); Baton Rouge and Shreveport are strong regional markets. Louisiana's CRNA shortage is among the most acute in the Gulf South, particularly in rural parishes north of I-10.

Practice Model

  • Written collaborative practice agreement with licensed Louisiana physician required
  • Louisiana has NOT opted out of federal Medicare CRNA supervision requirement
  • ACT model: Ochsner Medical Center, Tulane Medical Center, LSU Health facilities
  • CRNA-independent (with collaborative agreement): LCMC community hospitals, North Louisiana regional hospitals, rural parish CAH facilities
  • Rural North Louisiana and Acadiana (Lafayette) regions have persistent CRNA shortages with some of the highest vacancy rates in the Gulf South

Application Requirements

  • Active Louisiana RN license (compact or LA-issued)
  • Current NBCRNA certification
  • Official nurse anesthesia program documentation
  • Completed lsbn.state.la.us application + $100 fee
  • Criminal background check via Louisiana State Police

Processing Timeline

Louisiana State Board of Nursing processes APRN applications in 6–10 weeks from complete submission. Temporary authorization is not routinely issued. Processing times can vary seasonally — hurricane season (June–November) can create staffing disruptions at the Board; plan with extra lead time during summer months.

What We See at Ava Health

Louisiana's CRNA market is characterized by a persistent shortage that is most acute in rural parishes. New Orleans positions command a premium driven by the city's cultural draw and healthcare complexity (high trauma and acute care volumes). The Acadiana (Lafayette, Opelousas) market correlates with oil-and-gas industry cycles — surgical volumes track drilling activity. Rural North Louisiana (Monroe, Alexandria, Natchitoches) has CRNA vacancies that can last 12+ months; facilities in these communities offer competitive signing bonuses and occasionally subsidized housing to attract candidates.
