How to Get an RN License in Florida (2026): Full Step-by-Step
Florida is one of the fastest-growing RN job markets in the US. It is a compact state member, meaning an RN with a multi-state (compact) license from another NLC state can practice in Florida without applying separately. Everyone else must go through the Florida Board of Nursing either by examination (for new grads) or by endorsement (for RNs already licensed in another state).
Do You Need to Apply? (Compact Check First)
Florida joined the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) in 2018. If you hold a multi-state (compact) RN license issued by your primary state of residence and that state is an NLC member, you can practice in Florida immediately — no Florida application needed. You just have to keep your compact license active.
You DO need a Florida-specific license if any of these apply:
- Your home state is NOT a compact state (e.g. California, New York, Massachusetts)
- You hold only a single-state license from a compact state
- You are moving your primary residence to Florida — then you must apply for a Florida compact license within 60 days of establishing residency
- You are a new grad who has not yet taken NCLEX-RN
Path 1: New Grad — License by Examination
- Complete an approved nursing program — associate's (ADN) or bachelor's (BSN) from a Florida Board-approved school, or equivalent accreditation from another state.
- Apply through the Florida Department of Health (DOH) — online portal at MQA Online Services. $110 application fee.
- Complete the Live Scan fingerprint — $85 through a Florida-approved vendor (ID Solutions, Inc. or similar). Takes 5-7 business days to process.
- Register for NCLEX-RN — separate $200 fee paid to Pearson VUE.
- Receive your Authorization to Test (ATT) — typically within 2-4 weeks of application completion.
- Take NCLEX-RN — schedule at any Pearson VUE center. You'll know within 48 hours (unofficial via Quick Results).
- License issued — usually 7-10 business days after passing.
Total cost: ~$395 · Typical timeline: 60-90 days from application to license.
Path 2: Already-Licensed RN — Endorsement
- Apply for endorsement on the DOH portal — $110 fee. Select "License by Endorsement — RN."
- Submit verification of your current license — most states use Nursys (nursys.com) for automated verification; a few states still require mailed paper verification. Florida accepts both.
- Live Scan fingerprint — $85. Same Florida-approved vendors as new-grad path.
- Provide proof of 2-hour Human Trafficking course — Florida-specific CE requirement. Must be completed within 3 years prior to application. ~$20 online.
- Provide proof of Florida laws course — 2-hour course on FL nursing law and scope. ~$30 online.
- License typically issued in 30-60 days, faster if Nursys verification is already on file.
Total cost: ~$245 · Typical timeline: 30-60 days.
Temporary Permit Option
Florida issues a 120-day temporary permit to endorsement candidates who've submitted a complete application. Lets you start work while waiting for the full license. Request it on the DOH application portal.
Compact vs. Single-State: Which Should You Choose?
If Florida will be your primary state of residence, the compact license is almost always the better choice — same fee, lets you practice in 40+ other NLC states without reapplying. New grads establishing Florida residency should request compact at initial application.
Renewal
Florida RN licenses renew every two years. 24 hours of continuing education required, including:
- 2 hours in Medical Errors Prevention
- 2 hours in Florida Laws and Rules (required every other renewal cycle)
- 2 hours in Human Trafficking (once every 3 years)
- Rest can be any Florida Board-approved CE
Renewal fee: $80 (RN) or $55 (LPN). Renew online 90 days before expiration.
Common Denials and Delays
- Incomplete fingerprints — biggest single cause of delay. Double-check the vendor code matches DOH.
- Criminal history — not automatic denial, but requires a formal review by the Board (add 4-12 weeks). File a Criminal History Affidavit with full court documentation upfront.
- Missed CE for endorsement — Florida wants to see recent activity within the last 3 years.
- Nursys verification not received — if your original state doesn't participate in Nursys, request a paper verification from them directly.
Florida RN Job Market
With nursing shortages in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and the Panhandle, Florida facilities are running aggressive sign-on bonus programs:
- ICU / ER: $15-25K sign-on common
- L&D: $10-20K sign-on
- Med-Surg: $8-15K sign-on
- Night-shift differentials: $6-10/hr
