How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Florida

Florida is one of the largest and most dynamic physical therapy job markets in the country. With a massive elderly population, a booming statewide SNF and LTAC sector, major urban markets in Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville, and Naples, and a strong snowbird seasonal demand pattern, Florida PTAs enjoy consistent employment across virtually every practice setting. Florida is a PT Compact member and requires specific mandatory continuing education topics that distinguish it from most other states.

Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program

Florida has numerous CAPTE-accredited PTA programs at community colleges throughout the state, including programs at South Florida State College, Florida SouthWestern State College, Broward College, Santa Fe College, St. Petersburg College, and many others.

Program requirements:

  • Two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) from a CAPTE-accredited program
  • Minimum 16 weeks of supervised clinical education across approved settings (SNF, outpatient, acute care, pediatrics, etc.)
  • Coursework in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation techniques, and clinical documentation
  • Official transcripts required for DBPR application

Florida's large number of in-state programs means most graduates can complete clinical rotations locally and stay in-state for employment without a gap. Florida's PT Compact membership also makes it accessible for out-of-state graduates.

Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam

Florida requires passage of the NPTE-PTA through FSBPT.

  • Exam fee: approximately $485 per attempt
  • Format: 200 questions, 4-hour computer-based exam at Prometric
  • Passing score: 600 or higher (200–800 scale)
  • Attempt limit: 6 lifetime maximum
  • ATT process: apply to Florida DBPR first; receive Authorization to Test from FSBPT after Board review; schedule Prometric after ATT issued

Florida has numerous Prometric testing centers — Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, and others — making scheduling logistically convenient.

Step 3: Apply for Your Florida PTA License

Florida PTA licensure is regulated by the Florida Board of Physical Therapy Practice under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

  • Licensing fee: approximately $75–$100 (verify current fees at flhealthsource.gov or myfloridalicense.com)
  • Background check: criminal history background check required; Florida uses a fingerprint-based electronic check through the DBPR portal
  • Jurisprudence: applicants must demonstrate knowledge of Florida Statutes Chapter 486 (Physical Therapy Practice Act) and related Board rules (Chapter 64B17, FAC); Florida does not currently require a scored jurisprudence exam for initial PTA licensure, but applicants attest to knowledge of state law
  • Application materials: official transcripts, FSBPT score verification, fingerprint background check, application fee, and required attestations
  • Processing time: typically 4–10 weeks; DBPR online portal allows application status tracking

Florida PTA licenses renew every two years. The DBPR license lookup is publicly accessible and widely used by Florida employers for credential verification.

PT Compact Membership

Florida is a member of the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact (PT Compact). Compact membership is valuable in Florida for:

  • Travel PTAs taking assignments in Florida's high-demand SNF and LTAC sector during peak snowbird season (October–April)
  • PTAs from compact member states relocating to Florida; compact privileges allow immediate practice while completing a full Florida license application
  • Multi-state health systems with Florida and non-Florida locations; staff can cross-cover with compact privileges

Activate compact privileges through the PT Compact Commission portal once your home-state license is compact-eligible and in good standing.

Continuing Education Requirements

Florida requires 30 continuing education hours per two-year renewal cycle, with several mandatory CE topic requirements that are specific to Florida law:

  • Medical Errors (2 hours): Florida law requires 2 CE hours in prevention of medical errors (FS 456.013); this is mandatory for all Florida-licensed healthcare professionals including PTAs
  • Domestic Violence (2 hours, cycle-specific): Florida requires domestic violence training CE; verify current cycle requirements with DBPR as the hour and cycle requirements have varied over time
  • HIPAA / HIV/AIDS (1 hour): Florida has required HIV/AIDS training or HIPAA-related CE for certain healthcare license types; verify current specific requirements for PTA at the DBPR or flhealthsource.gov — requirements may change by legislative session
  • Remaining CE hours must be relevant to physical therapy practice
  • DBPR-approved online CE providers are numerous; verify provider approval status before completing hours
  • Retain CE certificates for three years minimum in case of audit

Always verify current mandatory CE requirements directly with the Florida Board of Physical Therapy Practice or at flhealthsource.gov before your renewal period, as Florida's legislature periodically updates mandatory CE topics and hour requirements.

Florida PTA Salary Ranges

Florida's PTA salary landscape varies significantly by market, with South Florida bilingual premiums and snowbird-season travel rates adding meaningful upside:

  • Statewide typical range: $48,000–$68,000 per year
  • Tampa / Tampa Bay Metro: $50,000–$68,000 — one of Florida's strongest PT markets; large SNF, outpatient, and LTAC sectors
  • Orlando Metro: $50,000–$68,000 — rapidly growing; hospital outpatient and sports rehab are strong sectors
  • Miami / Broward / Palm Beach (South Florida): $52,000–$70,000+ — highest wages in the state; bilingual (Spanish-speaking) PTAs command a meaningful premium in South Florida markets, particularly in outpatient and home health settings serving the large Spanish-speaking population; Portuguese-speaking PTAs in Brazilian communities (Boca Raton, Doral) may also see similar advantages
  • Naples / Fort Myers / Southwest Florida: $50,000–$68,000 — high per-capita elderly population; strong SNF and home health demand; seasonal surges during snowbird months
  • Jacksonville: $48,000–$65,000 — growing market with significant military-connected outpatient demand (Naval Station Mayport, NAS Jacksonville)
  • Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) / LTAC: $50,000–$67,000 — Florida has one of the nation's highest SNF and LTAC patient volumes due to its large elderly population
  • Home Health: $50,000–$67,000 — particularly strong in South Florida and Treasure Coast communities
  • Outpatient Orthopedics: $48,000–$65,000 across major markets
  • Travel PTA: $35–$55/hr all-inclusive; Florida seasonal travel rates spike during October–April snowbird season; agencies often offer Florida-specific contracts with housing stipends; multi-state PTAs targeting snowbird season assignments can earn meaningfully more than year-round staff rates
