How to Become a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Delaware
Physical Therapist Assistants in Delaware work under the supervision of licensed Physical Therapists to deliver therapeutic exercise programs, physical modalities, manual therapy assistance, and clinical documentation. Despite being the second-smallest U.S. state by area, Delaware has a diverse healthcare employment landscape spanning Wilmington's major academic medical centers, Dover's community hospitals, and a large retirement community corridor along the Sussex County coast. Delaware's location in the densely populated Mid-Atlantic corridor, bordered by Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey, makes it an attractive base for PTAs who value geographic flexibility.
Step 1: Complete a CAPTE-Accredited PTA Program
Delaware PTA licensure requires graduation from a CAPTE-accredited program. CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education) is the sole recognized accreditor for physical therapy education programs nationwide. Standard CAPTE PTA programs award an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Physical Therapist Assisting over approximately two years. The curriculum covers foundational anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic exercise, modalities, and neurological rehabilitation, plus a minimum of 16 weeks of supervised clinical rotations.
Delaware has limited in-state CAPTE-accredited PTA program options; Delaware Technical Community College has offered PTA programming. Many Delaware PTAs complete their education at programs in nearby Pennsylvania, Maryland, or New Jersey. Verify current accreditation status at capte.org before enrolling.
Step 2: Pass the NPTE-PTA Exam
Delaware requires all PTA applicants to pass the NPTE-PTA, a 200-question computer adaptive exam administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) at Prometric testing centers. The exam lasts four hours and requires a score of at least 600 on the 200-800 scale. Combined FSBPT application and Prometric testing fees total approximately $485. With only six lifetime attempts permitted, structured exam preparation over three to four months is strongly recommended. Prometric testing centers are accessible in the greater Wilmington area and nearby Philadelphia metro.
Step 3: Apply for Your Delaware PTA License
The Delaware Board of Physical Therapy, under the Division of Professional Regulation, issues PTA licenses in the state. After passing the NPTE-PTA, complete the Board's application form and submit it with a fee of approximately $75-$100. Required documentation includes official NPTE-PTA score verification from FSBPT, official transcripts from your CAPTE-accredited program, and a criminal background check. Delaware does not require a separate jurisprudence examination for PTAs. Standard processing time is two to four weeks after all documents are received by the Board.
PT Compact Membership
Delaware is a member of the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact. An active Delaware PTA license in good standing qualifies you to apply for multistate practice privileges in other compact member states via the PT Compact Commission portal. This is particularly useful for Delaware PTAs who work or live near the borders of Pennsylvania and Maryland, both of which are compact members. Compact membership also facilitates travel PTA contracting in compact states without the delay and expense of separate license applications.
Continuing Education Requirements
Delaware PTA licenses are renewed biennially. Licensees must complete 20 hours of continuing education per two-year renewal cycle. The Delaware Board of Physical Therapy does not mandate specific CE topic areas for PTAs beyond relevance to physical therapy practice. Acceptable CE formats include live courses, webinars, online self-study modules, and APTA-approved programming. Keep records of all CE completion certificates for at least three years in case of audit.
Delaware PTA Salary Ranges
Delaware PTAs typically earn between $50,000 and $68,000 annually. Wilmington-area positions tend to offer higher base salaries, reflecting the concentration of major health system employers and the competitive Mid-Atlantic labor market. The Sussex County coastal communities, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Milford, have a substantial retirement and seasonal population that generates strong outpatient orthopedic and SNF PTA demand, often with housing-sensitive compensation structures. Travel PTA contracts serving Delaware's rural Kent and Sussex County facilities typically pay $36-$52 per hour with stipends.
