California RN License 2026 — BRN Endorsement, BreEZe & Timeline

California is the most populous state in the U.S. and one of the largest nursing markets globally — Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, Sutter Health, UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai, and UCSF are among dozens of major systems operating statewide. The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), accessible at rn.ca.gov, administers RN licensure under the California Business and Professions Code Chapter 6.

Is California an NLC compact state?

No. California has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) and is not expected to in the near term. Every nurse — including travel nurses — who wants to work in California must hold a California RN license or a valid California temporary work permit. This is the most important planning point for any nurse considering California assignments: begin the endorsement process 3–4 months before your anticipated start date.

Temporary work permit — the travel nurse's best tool

Because California processing times frequently run 8–16 weeks or longer, the BRN temporary work permit is critical for travel nurses on short-cycle contracts. The temporary permit is valid for 90 days and is non-renewable — it can only be used once per endorsement application. Apply for it at the same time as your endorsement to start the clock as early as possible. Note: the temporary permit is only available to nurses who already hold an active, unencumbered license in another U.S. state.

Continuing education for renewal

California RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the birth month. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from BRN-approved providers. Mandatory topic areas are specified by the BRN and have historically included pain management and end-of-life care. Check rn.ca.gov before each renewal cycle for the current mandatory topic list, as requirements are updated by board regulation.

Timeline expectations

California BRN is one of the slowest processing boards in the country. A straightforward endorsement application — Nursys electronic verification + Live Scan cleared — typically takes 8–16 weeks. Applications requiring paper verification or those with any disclosure items (criminal history, prior discipline, malpractice) can take 4–6 months or longer. Plan accordingly. The BRN's online status system updates as applications move through stages, and you can call the main line after 60 days if your application has not moved.
