Alabama PA License 2026: Physician Assistant Requirements, Process, and Salary
Alabama physician assistants are licensed through the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners (BME). The state uses a supervision model, requiring PAs to maintain a formal written agreement with a supervising physician before practicing independently. Alabama has not moved to Optimal Team Practice (OTP) as of 2026, so that supervisory relationship must be in place from the start — a key consideration when negotiating new employment.
Practice Model: Supervision Required
Alabama PAs work under a written supervision agreement with a licensed Alabama physician. The agreement must specify the PA's scope of practice, prescriptive authority, and the physician's availability for consultation. There is no required on-site physician presence for routine PA practice, but the supervising physician bears legal responsibility for the PA's clinical decisions.
